Alternator packup up two weeks ago, had it refurbished .. voltmeter up at 16V plus now.. likey to be a loose wire from regulator?.. reg was newish.. ..edit, not got the plug at the alternator end just female connectors. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Loose battery positive or earth connection. Or you have picked a random combination of the three wires on the alternator to connect the regulator up.' Its probably worth doing something like putting a disc of plastic on those three wires with three holes drilled in it corresponding to the connectors on the alternator. So it "guides" you to put the connectors in the right place.
I'll give the battery posts a clean up and drop the alternator for a check then..just in case... Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Just a dodgy 12 month old regulator... could have been upset by a dying alternator to give it benefit of doubt or just shoddy stuff again.. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Yes, as the alternator output dies away (probably just needed new brushes), the regulator would try to increase the field current by upping the voltage on the rotor, if the brushes were arcing as they died then the current through the regulator would be all over the place as it disconnects and reconnects suddenly from the rotor, and it probably got hotter than it should..
