No power to the coil/ Won't start

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by GunnerGav, Apr 5, 2012.

  1. Hello, I'm new to the forum just bought at T2 1977 in baby blue that's not starting. I picked it up on monday and drove 3 hours in it then 17 miles from home foot on the accelerator no power! I have no spark from the coil. I've tried fitting a new bosch coil after ditching the old Lucas (prince of darkness) one but no luck, still no spark. I've checked the fuses and no problem there now I'm stumped. Anyone got any ideas?

  2. Has the wiring plug fallen off the back of the ignition barrel or worked loose?

Oh and welcome to the late bay gav

  3. I'll have a look now....

Have you checked to see if the wire to the positive is actually live?

Get the multimeter out and have a play.

  5. Ok had the multimeter out registering 0.40 to 0.50 of a volt from the coil, stuck the meter on V20. The main power cable is the coil T15 positive side. Had a look at the steering column there are two fat black connectors both fully home and no loose wires.

  6. Anything else not working? Just wondering if you actualy have a supply on the distribution board at the front. Though not fused the ignition feed does loop off of it.

  7. No everything else is fine start motor fires, radio is fine and battery light comes on. The pressure light always stays on but I think that is due to no wire connected from the sender unit! Another job to add to the list.... :D

roll the fuses in the fuse box with your fingers and check for voltage again.

  9. Sometimes a coil just has to make a stand. O0

    I'll get my hat. ::)

  10. the coil isn't fused

if you aren't getting 12v (or something close) at the coil you have a wiring problem

i can't remember the colour of the coil wire but you can trace the other end to a connector behind the fuse box

remove the 2 screws for the fuse and find the same coloured wife as on the coil and check for power here

The coil feed should come from the 12th fuse feed check you have 12v with the ignition switch on
do your brake light work as this is fuse 12 aswell

  14. Oh what a mess I've got myself into! Had a guy out to have a look today the points weren't opening in the dissy, I have a vacum advance bosch unit. So off to GSF to get a new distributor got an 009 vacum less one as I have a petronix kit for this. I bring it back and the rotor arm and shaft are at the wrong point compared to the old distributor. Thing is its not 180 degrees out its about 60 out so I need another distributor! Guess I'll have to take the vacum advance along and get another one. Anyone know the best place to go?

I did get my oil pressure sender unit hooked up though and I now have dash lights so it wasn't a total waste of time. :D

  15. I think 009 is supposed to be out, no1 goes in a different position on the 009 to the vac distributor.

  17. No the dissy had not stripped the rotor arm v the shaft on the engine side are in a different postion on the 009 I have but its a copy! Hearing conflicting reports about vacum v no vacum I've been told no vacum is better with eletronic ignition. Oh what to do I have petronix for non vacum.

  18. Cheers for the link Majorhangover, I thnk I'll have a go myself tomorrow and try again with the 009 dizzy and petronix kit. I have all the kit multimeter and timing gun. Got the feeling the electrics guy was taking a bit of a stab in the dark with sorting the timing! As long as the 009 does fire in a different place...
