Newbie in a pickle!

  1. Hi everyone. I'm Matt from Doncaster. I realised my dream 6 months ago and bought a 78 bay called Deborah, generally tidy but rough around the edges (best I could afford!). She has a 2 ltr T4 engine and I have been gradually sorting her with little budget and no knowledge whatsoever (steep learning curve!). New heat exchangers, new weber (empi) carbs, new ignition and a complete custom interior later I am now stumped. Just thought she was finally ready and was running her in ready for the family outings when I could hear the heat exchanger wasn't properly sealing anymore. I assumed it just needed nipping back up but when I tried, I realised one of the studs is just spinning in the engine (head???). I removed the stud and it looks ok so I assume the problem is with the threads in the engine? So basically; is this a major issue? What can I do? Can it be re-tapped or am I in trouble? Can I just run with it leaking? (it's only slight at the mo). Any advice hugely welcome.

what shape is the exhaust outlet, oval or squarish? best to fix it really a retap and a bigger stud of a helicoil or similar will fix the problem with the engine is situ

Hi Matt :) Where in Donny are yer, thats four of us now

  6. Cheers! Outlet is kinda oval. The heat exchangers are the type that extend past the flange and sealed with a copper gasket. Seriously relieved this is an engine-in job!

  10. Thanx. I look forward to the day when I can venture further than the end of the street without something dropping off or petrol or oil spraying everywhere! Hopefully nearly there...

  11. as others have said, you need to pull the old stud and very carefully tap the hole out to a larger size (M10 most likely). Then have a new stud made.

Needs to be done or your engine won't be right and you'll get a hotspot
    :)

  12. when i've looked at a head off the 1600 TP, I wondered if there's enough room to slip a nut behind where the stud threads in the head as there's a space rather than being a blind thread, just a thought if they are similar to the 2L...

T4 heads are completely different LC.

Some T4 heads have m8/m8 exhaust studs, some have m8/m9. If the one you pulled out is m8/m8, get an m9 tap (probably cheaper to buy a whole set strangely) and an m8/m9 stud from Heritage. That's save you making studs or buying a helicoil kit.
