New fuse box info wanted

  1. Hi,
Bit too much piggy backing I almost got myself into trouble on my last trip out so have decided to do what I should have done a long time ago and install a new fuse box, add some ign lives and perm 12v supplies.

I thought someone must have already done it, be useful to read up but no posts when I searched.

Has anyone else done this, any advice or anything to watch out for, fuse box suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Pg

Your choice is between repeating using bullet fuses or modern blade fuses. I have a second ignition power fuse box over on the drivers side with bullet fuses at the front for fog lights and fuel shutoff solenoid.

I have two blade style fuse boxes at the back , one is leisure related by the solar charge controller, the other is in the engine bay for things like split charge fuse, electronics and reversing light.

I swapped a bullet style fuse holder out in the back as the plastic bodied bullet fuses on the leisure system got too hot and softened and fell out.

  3. Thanks Mike, I like the bullet types and I've never had one come out but the blade ones are more robust so I'm going to fit those

  4. I have got a blade type mounted at the side of the main fuse box for ancillaries. It’s split between battery & ignition feeds and some leisure battery feeds interior lights/radio etc.
Have a look at Altec auto electrical they have a good selection

  5. Nooo. I initially had a second fuse box in the back with blades for my leisure circuits, but the inconsistency of style made me eventually swap for bullets. The down side is that there are now 3 or 4 bullet fuses dropped down the back of my fridge which I'll never see again.

If you buy from Frost Restoration, on a quick sample, about 50% of their bullet fuses have ceramic bodies.
Never throw away the ceramic body from a blown bullet fuse, peel off the wire strip from a plastic one and reuse it.
Simple way to tell is to use a soldering iron, match or gas lighter on the fuse body. Ceramic ones go sooty, plastic ones melt.

Blade fuses are horrible, the holders are often not really rated to the current you can put through the fuses - the thing about e.g. a 10 amp fuse is that at 10 amps constant current, the fuse sits there about to melt , and causes the fuse and holder to oxidise.

  7. Small additional fusebox with Ripart(?) blade fuseholders for leisure battery stuff under the dash...
