New clutch issue

  1. Hi folks,
Wondering if anyone can help. 1978 late bay which recently had an AD engine failure. Purchased new AS engine along with larger 215 clutch and pressure plate and release bearing attached to original 3 rib gearbox All reassembled and engine running great.
problem is when I have engine running I can’t get any gears. I did manage to momentarily get reverse and she moved but couldn’t get any others.
have tried adjusting cable but can’t seem to make any difference.
I changed nothing in gear linkages during the work and can get all gears when engine is off
I’m suspecting something in the clutch but no idea where to start
    Any advice appreciated!

Use your hand to judge the pedal free play, it may need to be tighter than you think.

  3. ^this. Sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging.

  4. I’ve tried tightening up the clutch cable as tight as it will go but still not working

  5. What does the pedal feel like when you press it with your hand?

  6. A little free play then feel it pulling the lever and it’s heavier

Assuming you didn't alter the adjustment during changing engines it shouldn't have been far out despite it being a different size clutch.
If you changed the cable perhaps your new one is the wrong length.
Post a pic of the side of the gearbox including the lever/wingnut and the whole flexible conduit if you can - we might spot something amiss and save you taking the engine back out.

I think the 73 onwards cable may be slightly longer. It’s that weird crossover thing. I’m sure my 72 clutch cable was shorter compared to my 73 cable on my old bus.I may be wrong…

I had to stack washers onto the outer of my new clutch cable at the bracket on the gearbox to get the clutch to release properly, when I replaced the cable. 20231011_172431.jpg

Also is the other end of the Bowden tube in that picture stabilised by the bracket that should be solidly attached to the rear suspension tube but which often ends up loose ?

If that is loose it affects clutch engagement.
