Negative/Ground cable spec

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Spacecowboyuk, Nov 16, 2020.

  1. Speaking to VWH they don't seem to have an eta on when they will receive their next shipment of the above but advise it will be sometime next year.

They are also unable to tell me if they will be supplying the flat braided type or sheathed round type. As I'm unable to wait until next year to find out answers to these questions I have found someone locally who can make one up - all I need is the wire spec (assume I have to settle for sheathed round type for now) and the 'M' hole size for the eye connecting to the chassis. Anyone know?

Edit: it's the chassis to battery negative lead spec I'm after.

  2. All the suppliers sell them. If VWH don't have them you can easily buy them from Machine7 or Schofields. I got a flat braided Machine7 earlier this year and its fine, well crimped.

  3. I'd go for braided, as it's more flexible. Just about everyone sells something suitable (except VWH, it seems). Even a generic one will do.

  5. PS As I recall, the mountings are M8.

  6. I was going to suggest your local motor factors - they`ll have something decent quality at half the price !!
(Halfrauds as a last resort )

  7. Cheers all. I know I can get one from other suppliers but not as quick as within 20 mins tomorrow morning if I know the correct wire spec etc.

I figure if braided isn't hugely important (I accept its more flexible) I can live with a standard item for now whilst I order another in slightly slower time.

  9. A solid engine earth strap (and battery -ve, for that matter) is a real pain, in my experience.

  10. Fair enough. I probably wasnt clear in my initial post but it is the chassis to battery earth/negative lead I need. My local supplier can only make up sheathed variety unfortunately.

Ebay ? That's where mine came from..the most difficult bit is getting one short enough.

  12. Battery earth should be unsheathed and smaller current capacity than the positive starter cable, 25mm2 as opposed to 35mm2. As the starter cable is unfused the reasoning is that if the starter cable shorted to earth, the earth cable would hopefully burn out without setting fire to the insulation.

  13. That makes sense. I've gone ahead and ordered one from VeeWee. About 6 quid more expensive than VWH even with discount but at least its in stock and I know what I'm actually getting

  14. Ah, the old 300A fuse

  15. Yeah, a slow blow fuse.

  16. I think we all seem to migrate to specialists suppliers for bits and parts when small hardware, car parts and even agricultural merchants can supply the items like earth cable nuts & bolts, grease nipples etc at a better price.

  17. Turns out that even Vee Wee can't get it bloody right. They advertise a flat braided type and sent me the stiff sheathed type (ooo er).

To be continued tomorrow as I'd ran out of time to sort it out before I had to head back to the hospital, but what a bunch...

  18. Now sorted. Apparently there's a bit of a shortage atm. This was the last in their stock (fair play they searched for it):
