Needed! A step by step idiots guide to testing my vans fuel tank sender!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dripstand, Nov 26, 2016.

  1. As above anyone able to help me with s step by step idiots guide to testing to see if my sender needs replacing.

At the moment when ignition turned on it goes immediately (and rapidly) to full when the tank is empty.

Can I test it without the bother of removing the tank? I can get to the tank as got the engine out at the mo.

What settings and how do you use a multimeter to test this? Anything I should check around the other end in cab?

    Thanks

Disconnect the sender wire on top of the tank. If it still goes straight up then the wire is earthing on the body somewhere, or the gauge is kippered. if it doesn't move, your sender is jammed.

Or, take the speedo pod out, remove that cable tied dodgy connection, make sure it's not earthing on the back of the pod, reconnect the sender wire that had been left off in the past, and then marvel at how the gauge reads half a tank ...;)

  4. What type of fuel sender is it? Tube type or floaty lever type. The tube type is 96 ohms when the floats at the bottom (empty).
