Need help choosing a cooler box please

  1. Hi Everyone,

I am looking around Amazon.co.uk for a camping cooler box which is going to be placed between driver and passenger seat.
Problem is the max width we can fit in there is about 330mm and most I am finding are at least 370mm on the narrowest side.
Do any of you keep a cooler box here and what is it you use?

Ideally I'd like it to run on 12v and 240v as I have a UK plug behind the passenger seat and one that is portable would be a bonus.
I have seen one in Halfords that you can pull like a trolley but it's too wide.

    Any help appreciated.

  2. According to the manufacturer, the Igloo 38 Quart Wheelie Cool is listed as 58.42 x 32.72 x 40.01 (LxWxH), although the one on Amazon has different dimensions for some reason

There's also the Igloo MaxCold Ultra 40 roller at 32.715cm wide

Basically, you're looking at sub-40 litre coolboxes and, depending on the shape, maybe a lot less than that - some go for width, others for height to get the same capacity.

Of course, if you want 12v-powered then all bets are off and you're probably looking at around 24 litres like this one from Easy-Camp:

  3. Ours is a vintage coleman coolbox that we got from VolksWorld. Prior to that we had a 24L size and I have to say the big size is much better.

With the 24L size everything collects at the bottom and as the ice melts / sweats you wind up with loads of horribleness at the bottom of the cool box. Also - it's so deep that you only really use the stuff at the top.

With the bigger ones (chest sized) you can access everything in the coolbox evenly. Ours has a drain at the side which means we can drain any water out regularly. And worth mentioning that the chest metal coolbox is far better at keeping things cold than the plastic one we had previously.

(I know you said you were after 12v ones but in case you ever wanted to use it not 12v thought the above was worth knowing).

  6. excuse one's ignorance but a three way fridge/coolbox ... do you have to have three power sources connected or could you just drive round with plugged into the lighter socket? or is it product dependent?

  10. Just remember if you use it on gas in the van, you must have it vented otherwise you might wake up dead.
