Need float for Solex 34 Pict 3

  1. Hi everybody.

I'm Steve and am now on my third Type 2 Bay in 20 years.

I've been lurking every now and again for the past 9months and thank you all for a veritable wealth of useful tips and info. First time I have had to post a question though as the forum is usually so thorough.

My problem is the float in my Solex 34 Pict 3 has sprung a leak and filled with fuel. Hence a sinking float, too much fuel coming in, too much black smoke billowing out the exhaust and just not running right.

Can't work out how or where it has seeped in as I can't for the life of me get it to leak back out again. Basically I want to get a replacement but the internet isn't throwing up any obvious answers. Has anyone got any ideas on where to get hold of one? I have found this one in America (http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Carburetor-Float-Rectangular-070-129-391-p/070-129-391.htm) but I am a little concerned as to whether it is a direct replacement as mine is a) white/transparent and b) seems to be moulded very slightly differently on the top.

Also, I would rather try and get it in the UK as it would get to me sooner and not cost a fortune in shipping costs. I would really appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction for a UK supplier.

    Cheers all.

    Welcome to TLB.

Try and post a wanted add in the classified section, there must be loads of members with old carbs knocking about. You may get lucky!

  4. Thanks Tricky, I will give them a call first thing tomorrow.

Hi Silver. Thanks for the advice. Didn't want my first posting here to be a blatent blag though! I will try this if Tricky's tip doesn't pay off.

Hi Paradox - thanks for the welcome.

  5. i have 2 old solex carbs. 32-34 pdsit-3. stripped it but the float is black and round not rectangular. let us know if float any good to you. the carb leaks so no good to man nor beast but float seems ok.

  6. Hi Jammy, thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure whether the round float will work in the Pict3 or not. Does anyone else know?

Try Jeff at Gower and Lee, mailto:sales@gowerandlee.co.uk

He managed to find me a thermostatic bypass valve which I was well impressed by.

  8. Mcswiggs, thanks a lot.

I thought the price was a little steep (£19.50 plus carriage & VAT = £28.14), but Jeff is getting it to me tomorrow. Also, these new floats are one moulded piece (without a seal in the middle) so I shouldn't experience the leaking problem again.

trikky2 - I did try your recommend but they didn't reply to my email or answer the phone, although everyone is entitled to a day off right? Thanks for the reply though.

being hew to this forum, I have no idea how the karma thing works, if you can let me know I'll pass some on.

    Ta.
