hahahahah yes, all the old name are changing :( Im based in what use to be called Pretoria which is FAR FAR away from the coast at least so the rust is not as aggressive on Nara.

Transvaal... hahahahah Havent heard that word in a while... Tswane now.. Sand is all over but the plate you have is form an area caller the Orange Free State... if its still called that

  3. There was an interesting article in the last "Hayburner" magazine, here in the uk. It featured an ex South African split bus that had also been an ambulance.
The owner didnt know the whole story, but you could see the outlines of some faint sign writing still existing.
I wondered if it had been a private ambulance fron one of the mines.
The red sand is Laterite, what Africa is made of!! Could have come from anywhere.
Pretoria, nice place, think of me when you go past Wonderboom, the "Boom" was one of my old stamping grounds.

Wanted to register for the hay burner mag a while back. Ambulance busses seem to be quite sought after. Wonderboom!!! Will do hahahaha how long ago did you leave SA?

  5. Not sure how much the postage to SA would be for the Hayburner magazine, probably quite a lot.
Its mainly useful for all the address's of uk VW vintage dealers.
I lived and worked in the (good) old SA 40 years ago, working for a Helicopter company out of Baragwanath, Joburg.
Travelled extensively all over SA, supporting the choppers which were contracted to ESCOM.
The company was owned by Bristow Helicopters of the UK, who eventually closed us down, for political reasons, otherwise its possible that we would still be there.
How old are you and what line are you in?

Interesting picture of all the VW's at Muldersdrift, I used to live near Honeydew, a nice rural place before all the motorways were built.
I wonder if my imported 1970 1500 Beetle is in amongst all those cars, hope so, good car, drove it from Nigeria to London, over the Sahara,
    before importing it to SA.

That sounds like a load of fun!! There were lots of beetles there, would have hoped for more bus's though. You have any photos of it?

  12. Nice bus, I've noticed two problems in your engine bay:-
1.) The fire wall is missing.
2.) The foam seal around the engine to bodywork is missing.
Both these parts are very important, get these fitted also you should change all of the small rubber breather hoses above the fuel tank & the one tucked up in the rear left corner above the battery tray difficult to see but easy to get at with your hand, change the fuel hoses too. Replace with decent quality stuff & use proper fuel hose clips not the cheap jubilee type.
Keep us updated with your progress M8, I had a nasty fire once which is why I am so concerned with these things.
    :)

Hi Chris, the bus has a fire wall in and we have also since those photos fitted a fire retardant foam around the engine in the bus. We have also put 2 x extinguishers into the bus. Im looking at getting one of those small systems that they put in the engine bay because we dont want to loose our bus to a fire. The bus was serviced recently and all those pipes were checked.

Thanks for the advice, one can NEVER be to safe!
