lets get this name thing sorted The law - a camper has to have a name end of , you can pretend you donts name things and you can blame the mrs or the kids but somehow someday someone will name yer van . Rule of thumb is - whoever names it choses the opposite sex as the vans sex and names it accordingly , Bob , Betty , Daisy etc . Unless of course your a dyslexic Hi talian like my mrs - Rbu - " ohh that could spell Rhubarb , we will call him Rhubarb n custard ! - err , No Lou you don't spell Rhubarb rbu - I do , and he's maroon n magnolia so shut up !!" , so thats that then , my van is Rhubarb n custard cos the mrs said so . If a guy has time to name his van he usually comes up with something good and original that no one else calls it and the family usually carry on calling it Daisy or Betsy much to the chaps constant annoyance -- " its Sheila's wheels " he will shout " its your mums vans and she's Sheila , but it falls on deaf ears , the kids prefer Betsy . We name our vans because they become part of us , we spend an awful lot of time with them and we rely on them to get us safely to our destination and shelter us and our loved ones from the extremes of the british climate . We name our vans because we need a suitable ending to the obscene adjectives we constantly shout at them when we are working on them or when they break down on some god foresaken hard shoulder or busy roundabout in the rush hour , In our long lineage of campervans we have had a Smiley , Froggy , chugg chug , naff taff ,tokyo joe and a Rhubarb , most of them vw campers and most of them named by Lou - " Ahhh , you can't have a van without a name - we will call him -- " she will then proceed to christen and breath humanity into a otherwise soul less object . This is all well and good until the day comes that you have to sell your beloved Arthur , Jenny , Ginny or Bob , then it becomes a bereavement , " Dads selling Bob kids " , she could just go down the social services and report me for child abuse , it would be less hearbreaking all around , i mean , i'd just go to jail for the night and get some legal aid sorted to defend myself in court , but selling Bob or Betsy or Daisy is akin to taking the cat to the vets for the last time , its got a name so its part of the family , the kids will hate you when you sell it and the mrs will back em up But its a van so it has to have a name .
I have a solution to that last bit. we're not selling our "Bobby". If it needs a major resto we can't afford, or for some reason we can't run it, it's been agreed that it goes in the garage until we can resto/run it.
I think it's old cars that have names not just campers i had a 69 landy and it was called Betsy, and a 79 called Gertie, but nothing else i've had other than them and the camper have been named, the only reason i named the new beetle is to make a pair with the bus Gene/Bolly.
btw went out in (Rhubarb ) today , went for a twenty mile run stopped off at a country pub for a swifty and the parked next to the landlords splitty , he congratulated me on good job and said they held the local aircooled meets there on the first weds of every month - drinks were free . after a rest she went like a dream , very pleased .
we have a small gathering at our house so i have asked on a name for xst -- Lou - Mr x , my brothers lot go for Dr x , William- sexy and my attempt would be - kissed Xst Not the miost original i know but thats our attempt
i didn't bother with a numberplate based name, maybe if it had been summat cool i may have but the van's called Bolly cos it's a champagne edition.
