My steering...

  1. I had a problem with my steering in that it was veering all over the place and was a bit of a scary drive. I got the wheel geometry sorted eventually, which has made it better, but it's still not right. I shall try and explain it as clearly as I can, but it's a bit difficult to explain... When I'm going anywhere between 30 - 55 mph, when I steer to the right (for example), then steer back straight, I seem to keep drifting to the right, like the steering is not very responsive, so I have to over compensate by steering further to the left, then back to centre, then I drift further to the left and have to over compensate by steering more to the right and so on and so on.

It's not bad enough so the bus isn't driveable, it's just a bit of a scary drive. It's fine around town but as soon as I'm out on the open road that's when it get's a bit scary and I'm clinging onto the wheel for dear life! It seems to be worse when I'm going downhill - I have to slow right down as I feel like I could go out of control.

I'm taking it to the garage soon, but just wondered if anyone can give me any pointers as to what may be the problem?

Front tyres are good. Front track rod end ball joint have 'slight play' according to my MOT advisory. Steering damper, steering coupling, and steering draglink have been replaced

    Cheers.

based on your past threads with the issues, out of interest what state is the steering box in & is it centralised correctly

  3. Hi it sounds like you have wear in your steering box,
you might be abel to adjust it.plus with wear in your joints it will make it worse.
o_O try moving your steering wheel and look at your wheels to see if they move at the same rate,if they.

Your steering should self-centre - it should go in a straight line on it's own if you let go so something is binding.

I replaced my ball joints and they were so stiff it was like you describe. Driving was so tiring I found some old ones for it.

    Do you have tools?

  5. Hi all, to be honest I'm not sure what I'm looking for when I look at the steering box, but I'm happy to learn. I will see if steering self-centres tomorrow and also try moving steering and looking at tyres. The steering wheel is slightly off centre. I don't have tools as yet so it probably will be a garage job to fix whatever the problem is.

With a jack, axle stands, a small ball joint splitter and a spanner you could narrow it down very precisely yourself. It's never too soon to start collecting tools...

  7. Like zed say's, if you have a camper you will need tools
because some jobs are very easy, if you do them your self you will get to know your camper better:confused: and trace faults quicker.
