  2. Have you been fiddling with your headlights? If you connect the sidelight bulb holder the wrong way round, it will blow the sidelight fuse.

..nope..I gave it a wash and on the next day this happened..headlights all good I only need to keep that gray/red wire disconnected..

  4. The sparks show that there is a dead short somewhere in the circuit - it's just a matter of finding where the short is - usually where the wires go through a bulkhead and there is a grommet missing - could be in the bulb holder itself as a starting point

  5. Check the number plate lamp as well, especially it's wiring for chaffing.

Just take your time. Try to get to that wire at the easiest points. Keep halving the problem. Eventually you will find it.

  9. I can’t quite make out the wire colours but fuse 2 should lead to the right rear light with a grey/red wire. Same colour goes on to the number plate. This is 12V +ve. The negative side is fed by a brown wire into the main lamp holder body.

Can you remove the bulb and turn on the lights without blowing a fuse? That would help narrow it down.

My first reaction was that of Snotty’s suggestion. Fuse 2 serves both front side lights and the rear right and number plate. It’s easy to get the front sides wired wrong but if it’s not that, then you’re probably looking in the right place.

  10. Could be. Forgot about that.

  11. You can eliminate which circuit the short is on, drop the fuse box down and disconnect the cables from the fuse in turn, the grey/red goes to the rear lights the one with the two greys goes to the front lights whichever one blows the fuse will tell you if it is front or rear circuit is causing the problem.

..I ve checked the bulb holder even swaped the near and off side over gave it good clean but still no joy..
..it still blows the fuse with no bulb in place..
..Im surpriced this happens just like that it was fine for years..but I know its a 40 years old vehicle at the end of the day
..the fronts are just fine with the fuse in place but once I connect that gray red wire back and touch the rear bulb holder spade it sparks and blows the fuse..

  15. Yes now I remember, the sleeving and insulation on mine wore through where it goes through the lid to the number plate.
