I love my multi-tool. I’ve got a makita 18v one. Mainly because I have other Makita battery tools. To be honest I mainly use it to cut things as I have also bought a Makita orbital sander
The only battery tool I have is a nice Hitachi drill, but their multi tool only seem to be available in the states. I like Makita too, I've got a 240v DA.
They really sling the dust sadly but they are wonderful indeed. I bare metalled this in 1/2 a day with one disc and it was still going.
Bish... Bash... Bosh... But oh dear, I used some latex based corrosion/ converter inhibitor on the steel... because I found it on the boat. Not quite sure what happened but the finish now looks like sandpaper, it'll need stripping right back and doing again. On the bright side I only used it on this part which was pure luck because it took a couple of years to go from shiny to rough as a badgers.
I read the other day that those rust converters use tannic acid and latex so it may be the tannic acid is causing the problem. Im not keen on those converters and prefer to remove as much corrosion as possible by mechanical means then use zinc phosphate Rich high solids primers. Most people seem to favour epoxy primers nowadays and you can get zinc rich epoxy primers now so best of both worlds
I think this was unusually latexy (if that's a word), it was quite thick and obviously rubbery, the kind of stuff you wouldn't need to overcoat with paint. I use vactan now and that is latex based too, but they are chalk and cheese, the vactan is thin. My theory is the stuff I used is intended to form a rubbery layer and it's blown up in the sun, the boat gets too hot to touch. It's more extreme where there was pitting which to my mind is simply more of it in the pits. To be clear, I would only vactan the very worst pits and then filler them. The rest just gets muchos coats of paint so yeah, I've given up on it anywhere I care about the finish. Inside is another story, you've seen the photos I'm sure - that will be getting vactan with a 4" brush and nowt else. As long as I rebuild with a good vapour barrier, which is a main point of the exercise, it'll be fine.
I imagine that boats are like busses that there’s always something else needs doing and what you did when you started now needs attention again. It’s also so much more difficult when your actually living in it full time.
Yes to all that but I shouldn't have had to rebuild the interior so it's not so bad. A windows out, fittings removed bare metal paint job ( the only way to do it properly) is about £10k and I've seen boats where it's gone wrong within a year. Getting redress is a nightmare if not impossible. One couple who have now thrown in the towel went through that twice with different painters on a new boat and never got a penny back, they blamed the hull manufacturer particularly is it happened twice in succession. The boat builder denied responsibility too of course. They never got off their mooring apart from when it got painted. A retirement dream turned nightmare. Hubby secretly pleased, he never wanted to live on a narrowboat, he liked going to his long time local with his mates.
See the green roof on the boat in the background? £2k paint job 2 years ago, just the roof. Allegedly done by painters who won several first prises for their paint jobs at a show this year.
Maybe it's that green stuff, some sort of anti-slip paint perhaps. Another neighbour a few years back. That's not leaves on the roof, it's peeled up paint, seems to pull up every coat down to the steel. Ah, you might say - they rushed the coats. Maybe, but my mate Bill paints his boat a bit at a time and can get 2 primer, undercoat and topcoat on in one day and it seems to be fine! Who'd have thought?
Ah, I did wonder. They advertise kits without batteries as "fits Hitachi batteries" which made them sound a bit dodgy to me.
If you get the Screwfix kit, remember it’s guaranteed for two years if it’s their own brand Titan. I reckon one or two should do the job then as you’re close to finishing, the fuses may go which might make you take them back and they’d give you a brand spanking new one that you could sell to some fool like me Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, get one each for you and your besty
"Feel Hikoki All Day!" is their slogan, I believe. Sure they could've thought of a better name. Noone's going to ask for a new battery for their Hikoki down the builders' merchants.
Lat year I repainted my roof and gunnels. I used fertan rust converter and on some parts the paint over appears to have already lifted. Where I used filler on the roof that has also blown . I’m not sure if it was because it was too hot when I did it? When I’ve got a bit of time I’m going to remove all the blown filler and repaint and just have a denty roof.
