Mr Idle - quiz 1

  1. Hey guys,
    so ('77 Westy. 2.0ltr FI)
    - idling problem started on way back from Cornwall, cutting out at intersections etc.. headache coming back into London.. seemed like problem was worse after we'd been driving for a while (maybe when warmed up?)

    - experienced, trusted VW mechanic couldn't identify exactly what caused it. but. after fiddling, tightening and sealing all the air pipes, he got it running happily and after driving it round the block a few times, couldn't recreate the problem

    - suggested i drive it round see if i can recreate it

    - on start, idles nicely, though quite high

    - after driving home (30 mins rush hour london) and a couple of times on way home, the idle drops off quite a lot, sounds like its about to stop, then speeds up again

    - parked it up outside and observed

    - idle drops off (slows down), more dark smoke comes out exhaust, something kicks in and idle returns to normal (quite high)

    - this repeats

    - never cut out (after 10mins observing)

    - sounds like something automatic is kick in, getting idle back up then reduces again till it sounds like it'll cut out, then goes back up

    - doesn't idle smoothly over time

    thoughts?

i'd guess it's your air flow meter disconnect it from the air filter and see if it runs any different - malc it's fi - we have no choke.

  4. Ricky isn't there an auto choke?

no auto choke, there's a 5th injector in the centre of the engine which works like a cold start - in fact it's called the cold start injector .

ermmm, tickover faster you mean? it's just a mixture of more fuel and air mixture when cold, the thing is with the fuel injection it's done by the ecu (all be it a basic one on these - compared to todays cars)but yeah in essence i guess so, this is the problem there are so many things with fi when it plays up, you're just gonna have to resarch on ratwell etc - i'm only basing my limited knowledge on stuff i've picked up off here really.
