Morris our 1972 Dormobile Crossover

  1. This is our impulse purchase Bay called Morris. We have had him for 3 years and so far he has not moved a great deal. Purchased with a view to rennovation. Picked him up and within about 20 miles he was on the back of an AA van and already we were wondering what we had done. Since then we have done a lot of work around the house and garden to properly free up our garage so that he can fit in there and be comfortably worked on in the dry without the need to keep putting stuff away etc. This has involved stripping out the garage completely, painting the floors, boarding the roof and three new sheds. Furthermore whilst I had a good set of tools I still needed alot of metal working kit, welder clamps etc, and so several birthdays and christmases later I think I have most things I need, picked a compressor up a few weeks ago too. I have tinkered abit with it between then and now, exploratory work to see what is good or not, although I have not looked at the front end too much yet. I have now accumulated a few panels and metal so that I can start doing a bit on him. We have a small son, aged three, so time is still limited, most of what I get done is on a Thursday when he is at nursery so progress will be slow.
Anyhow here he is as delivered by the AA.

Morris looks nice and tidy already mate, hope it all goes well when you commence restoration!

  3. Thanks Mork, however, it is like many things, it looks alot better in the pics than the reality. It has rust in some usual places and also none where rust is typical so all in all it is not too bad.

So there is a bit of work without digging too deep.

  5. I have started a bit of the work and the other day Morris actually weighed more at the end of the days work than it did at the beginning.
Here is a bit of a repair to the rear left pillar, the rear corner has been removed (nearly fell off to be honest).

  7. Thanks Paradox, it is going to be a long job, but plan on taking it nice and steady.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

  14. Thanks for the replies, nope plan to change the colour, still not sure yet, but it was originally all over blue which I like or a green but I am a long way from that yet.
I am no fan of the wheels at all, so if anyone wants them make me an offer!!
Will try to get a couple more pics up today.
Also I have some advice from my short time at this, do not use gasless welding, I did to start with and whilst it is doable using Argoshield makes the world of difference, you cannot believe how much better the welds are with gas.

  15. Hmm there are already alot of votes for the colour but I am not convinced, it is different I suppose.

  16. Nice bus. Personally, I think they look so much nicer riding at stock height. Are you going to keep it that way?

  17. Baydreams I think I am going to lower it, not going mad though I do not like narrowed beams. I need to lower it a bit and alter the garage door in order to house it once the roof is back on the bus, without lowering there is no way it will go in the garage without some major door surgery.

  18. That's the colour I would love my van to be, albeit with a white roof.

  19. Here is the offside rear pillar. This is not complete yet still have to seam it up and prime, but ran out of gas the other day.
    This is it before

Old strengthening plate welded back in, this was not in great shape to be honest and the large weld in the middle of it is due to a combination of rot and a hairline crack that I made good.

Front box section made and tacked on. As you can see my plug welds need some work, those near the camera are where the gas ran out, might have to do them again.

All the metal work I made by cutting and hammering with a vice and dolly set.

  20. A couple more pics of some progress, still at the rear pillars.

I have done some other bits and pieces, I will post some pics when I get them uploaded, nothing startling but progress none the less.
Invested in a BOC bottle now too, welding with the correct gas makes all the difference.
