Monumental oil leak!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by alexc3441, Aug 24, 2012.

  1. On a trip to Newquay earlier this year I pulled up at the camp site and opened the decklid to plug in my 240v..
When I opened the lid I witnessed what can only be described as a massacre of oil! It was everywhere!!!!
I checked the levels which were very low indeed so I topped it up and calle around do a local VW garage.
The garage claim to have changed the flywheel oil seal and the oil cooler seals. The problem remains...
    My question is this........
Could it be just a case of the deals being fitted poorly or the job being rushed or could I be looking at something more sinister like a fractured block?
I can't see how it coul be the block but I'm not ruling it out due to the vast amounts of oil it looses..
Is it common for blocks to fracture? Are there any common areas for the blocks to let go?
    She is a 1976 1.6 twinport Viking.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

  2. "seals" being fitted poorly

  3. Mine is currently leaking from the push rod tubes.

Not sure if this helps but might be a good place to check

The flywheel oil seal wouldn't cause oil in the engine bay, the oil cooler seals would. It could be poorly fitted seals on the oil cooler.

Could look at the oil pressure switch, the dynamo/alt pedestal.

Is there no sign of whereabouts it comes from?

  6. Is your crankcase breather bunged up? Could be excessive crankcase pressure.

  7. Thanks people,
I had a look and the breather is as it should be... Maybe I should just drop the engine and bench run it..
    Is that possible?

  8. Oh, any tips on flywheel removal :-

  10. Upright engine then probably a leaky oil cooler. (Its inside the dog housing)

  11. Ahh thanks. Never worked on one of these before and I read a lot into a job before I do it. I hear mixed stories about flywheel removal. I'll just give it a shot!
    Thanks

  12. I will have a look when shes out!
Good link by the way, cheers!

It possible to run the engine on the floor to have a good look round it?

  13. Don't know about on the floor mate, i would clean as much oil off as poss and refill, then run engine up to temp and see what area the oil first appears. that might narrow it down a bit.
