Missing and then not missing !!

  1. Hello, I've a problem with my '72 1641 , a few weeks ago I managed to jam the throttle fully open against the alternator when driving down a local bypass, it was a bit of a "brown trouser" moment as I approached a roundabout with the engine reving like mad when I dipped the clutch. Managed to cut the ignition and coast to a safeish place to stop and freed the throttle mech, it was then running a bit lumpy but seemed to clear, I drove home and had a better look, couldn't get the mech to jam again so I'm not to sure how it did it last time! But it seemed to be running fine now . I hadn't driven it for a couple of weeks then took it out & drove about 6 miles then it started to run really rough it sounded like it was on it's last legs so I headed home and after about a mile it just cleared and ran fine all the way home.
It has an accuspark "009" distributor fitted, this has been on it for about 8-10 years, if this was starting to fail would it just stop working or could it be intermitant like this, but this only started after the engine had done some very high reving, I'm not sure how high it actually got.
Any thoughts on this greatfully received, thanks.

  2. Check the basics first then throw the 009 into the nearest hedge - and this is from someone who ran a 009 for many years without any issues...
Didn't realise how much they strangled the engine until I tried an '034' genuine Bosch SVDA .
To eliminate the module being the problem fit points and see if there's still a misfire...

Its probably not the Accuspark, as these take a while to heat up.

It could be a simple thing like dirt being stirred up in the carburettor blocking jets.

After 6 miles the choke comes off and you are then only using the idle jet for low speed running.

If you are using an 009 then you need to have the vacuum advance hose properly blocked off as thats an idle air leak. Same symptoms as a blocked jet. Or like @Marzydj bus where the"professional" installation of the engine left a brake booster hose wide open ( or the blockoff bolt popped out with a backfire)

You can jam carburettors by over rotating the throttle spindle. I would slacken the linkage a bit as you are obviously able to over do it by stamping on the pedal.

I wonder if the symptoms you have now are just a second problem, nothing to do with over revving.

Its pretty hard with a stock carburettor and exhaust to spin an engine so fast something breaks.

It will go better with an SVDA , keep the 009 as a pre timed spare. These days the recommendation is for well maintained points not recently made electronic units where the engine heat cooks the electronics in the module.
