@Gnasha, could you post that pic of your AA cylinder where the scallop for the head stud is almost across the bottom sealing face. I can’t find but I know you posted it somewhere. Thanks in advance.

Talking to them is sporadic. I'm waiting for some idea of what heads to the max look like.
You once quoted the stock head to case barrel length? I'll measure mine when I can but whatever they supply I'll have to put up with and have machined shorter if necessary.

Can't see how that could be, studs are a way off even at my size?

@Gnasha Found it on STF. @zedders are your 104’s like this? Apparently, it’s normal and the cylinder to case gap is filled with sealant.

AA said it’s normal, and those are just 96’s. Personally I wouldn’t accept them.

I don't see why they are cast like that, the studs are miles away! Mine had to be ground around the studs so I guess not. How weird is that? You'd think it would be the other way round.

I agree, it’s just poor quality – that’s the problem with AA, usually good but sometimes bad and they won’t admit it.

Pic is my 96 AA Biral on the left and a 94 Mahle iron on the right. Not a good angle but the scallops for the studs are well outside the sealing face – as they should be.

    Cylinder length is 91.79mm.

    Great timing, mine are 94.1mm
And the deck when measured properly is 3.5mm
So the compression ratio when she blew was 8.7:1.
That does make me happier heading for 8.1:1...with squish. I think though slightly smaller - 103 = 2366cc - it will be better.

  10. Can anybody tell me where I can purchase 4# type 4 barrel to case shims, 1mm / 0.o4" I have tried all the main VWAC parts sellers.

I found 4 at Mecatechnic France and ive been waiting weeks for a respose, I think the ones I was looking at are for waterboxes and not sure if compatable with aircooled.

    any help would be appreciated.

    I'm heading for a 7.6CR.

7.6:1 CR is too low whatever cam you have.

  13. ...and it's only pushing a k ghia.. if your cam has much overlap you'll loose some of that CR too..

It must be for his other engine, the one for the Ghia has a C35 cam and that definitely wont work with 7.6:1 CR.

TBH I'm a bit disappointed with that mob at the moment. They've spent years telling me to sort my deck out and now I am it's either ignore me tell me I'm a stubborn fool.
I was only trying to stop the blinking exhaust popping. lol

AFAIK Mecatechnic don’t stock Type 4 cylinder base shims and Wasserboxer are not compatible - that’s probably why they haven’t replied. As above CSP have shims but why aim for a 7.6:1 CR?

Needs them for minimum deck, combustion chambers are what they are, CR works out as it has.

Are these the ones which come with the type 4 gasket set from Reinz?

  20. No , they're normally the ones you dont put in the head anymore..
