Measurements/pics of Dormobile roof frame

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by Obonobo, Aug 20, 2013.

  1. Hi all,

my van has a simple, small poptop now, but a Dormobile roof is waiting in my garage to be installed!
I have all the bits and bobs, minus the 'frame' that goes on the edge of the hole in the roof and connects to the body of the bus for support.

Can anybody show me the way to measurements, drawings or good images of the frame? Dormobile won't help me, I tried :(. I had a look around here and found a few pictures, but nothing that I could build my own from.

    Thanks for your help!

  6. Hi Sietze, I had to make up my own frame when I changed from a devon pop top to a second hand dormobile. Have a look at my resto thread to see if the frame is the sort of thing you want to make for yours. If so, I can give you dimensions and photos of what I did. The hole in my roof was too long, so I had to weld a section in at the rear. The roof sits further back than original dormobile conversions.
My resto thread is titled Wilbys long term resto.

  7. Just been searching around and came across this thread. I have an original Dormobile but someone in their infinite wisdom removed the pop top and put a rag top on instead. I have since bought a decent secondhand roof complete with everything but the frame, so I face the same challenge as you guys did. One advantage I have is that the hole in the roof is at least the right size so not too concerned there. My question really is, what material have you used for your frame? Mild/Stainless/Aluminium? Also, how easy was it to bend and how did you do it?

    Any help would be great.

Then you must be able to see all the holes for the original frame fixing? and some bigger holes at the ends where heavier stuff was bolted through? I can't help thinking that if I were doing Dormobile to ragtop I'd trim an inch (and all the holes) off all round.

It would be worth your while phoning Dormobile who are very helpful and will sell you anything you don't have/can't make.

  10. Yeah like I said I'm not worried about the size or positioning, more the material used and the technique for bending it?

MS angle, not much hope bending it youself as you know it needs to be bent in one direction only. If you can work out the radius, a steelwork fabricator might bend it for you, or I have seen one that had been cut every few inches, bent, then welded back up - not so neat. Or get a price from Dormobile?

  12. I was led to believe that Dormobile don't sell them? They seem to sell everything else so would make sense if they do.

You may be correct, I've never had to source the frame.

  14. The original Dormobile Ltd probably would have sold you a frame but the current users of the name may have no details of the framing as fitted to the T2 in the day though obviously they made patterns of some of the original components.
