Sorry Sharpey, didn't mean it to come across as you were responsible for the quality. And apologies to all for missing the link. Trying to post between jobs at work
The quality is excellent, Darren, the chap who makes them is a very gifted guy. You should see what he has done to his bay inside.
The difference as far as I'm aware is the glues used and all plywood has each layer running at 90° to the next sheet or its laminated. I wouldn't spend on marine grade but would buy exterior grade for moister resistance. The strength is in the direction of the face grain.
Exactly. I would expect Marine ply is a bit stronger but for van use its not worth the extra! I mean no matter how much condisation you get in the van, its not going to be floating in water for years is it! I know lots use MDF and its a personal thing but for me its ply everytime. MDF has no intrinsic strength , even if you seal it with something suitable it might be resistant to moisture but still a good knock will break it! Thats why all those companies offer MDF as a cheap off the shelf solution, its quick to make, good clean cut and easy to shape manufacture but you might as well use Cardboard from your cornflakes packet! hahahaa......
I would use oil tempered fibreboard if you can get it, same as hardboard but water resilient. Watch out for ply as it can distort. Also ply doesn't't bend well round the rear quarters,
Was thinking of ordering some of these ply panels, maybe staining them and varnishing them. as the van is pretty much stripped at the mo, I was wondering, do people put some kind of insulation behind them?
i will be using 2 mm alumin sheet ,my brother restores mgbs midgets sprites etc they usually have leaking soft tops so to avoid the door trims rotting thats what he uses and a lot of these cars are used in race meets its lightweight an takes the knocks
