Is anyone a mature student? Im thinking of going back to college to study motor mechanics but at 33 years old im thinking its going to be very strange to be surrounded by lots of others that have just left school.
I'm doing my HND in electrical/electronic engineering and I'm 35 (36 next week ) I've had a break of 2 years since completing my HNC (was only meant to be a one year break to restore the bus :laugh2 Hopefully I'll start a degree in the next couple of years, then go for chartered status .......then maybee a masters as work will pay for it all. and between finishing my apprenticeship and doing my ONC there was a 12 year gap The hardest thing is making the decision to start a new course, your never too old and its never too late to go back to college Do it mate ......before you change your mind
i d love to go and learn something new but it s what and when when i was at college for my apprenticeship i was nt interested enough but managed to get buy i think now i would soak it up a bit better
I like mature students. As a general rule, they're more motivated, more organised, and they turn up to seminars prepared.
Cheers guys Im hoping i can get some funding for it and if i can im going to go for it Ive been messing with cars since i was 15 so actually getting qualified would be brilliant I know theres not much employment out there for mechanics at the moment but im sure i could do really well and shine Then if ive gained enough confidence im contemplating setting up myself as a mobile mechanic
I went back to night school at 36 to do electrical installation and then the test & inspect, it took 3 years in total, 42 people started 3 finished. Do it, the kids soon drop out if they are not interested.
I am, currently doing a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Degree with the Open University, I will admit it is hard going but worthwhile! Work is covering my costs so its all good, and eventually, if I chose, work would also support me in getting a Doctorship (or whatever its called). I'd go tbh
Go for it, I finished my degree at 36 so obviously was a mature student. Wouldnt be where I am today withput taking that step. Never to old to learn and better oneself
I think it's a great idea. TBH education is wasted on the youth. I'd love to go back to university now and do some kind of criminology degree. Largely p*ed my way through it the first time.
Do it You will cope with it no proplem as half the time you will be helping the lecturer in showing them what end of the spanner to use.
Para, go for it!! I'm 57 & back at uni (part time) doing a B.Education. I was older than you are now when I did my Masters & I'm still toying with the idea of doing a Doctorate (for no other reason than my own enjoyment). It's great as a mature age student, you have the experiences that those straight from school don't have. I teach at a local tech college (hence going to uni to be properly qualified) & most of the time the mature age students are the ones who are most motivated & keen.
Im going to go for it Mostly as terrordales said for my own enjoyment I got my acceptance into the forces letter the same day i got my letter of acceptance on a motor mechanics course at wigan college The forces paid and got me away from home so won hands down It would be a nice feeling to have a certificate to say im competant in what ive been doing as a hobby for years I just need to see if i can still have my ressetlement grant of the forces as i had to deffer it due to illness when i left If not its some pleading at the job centre
May be worth checking out whether you can get some Government funding http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/FinancialHelpForAdultLearners/index.htm Also worth asking your employer, if it will be of use to them then they should help.
