I have a Numax battery charger sited next to me leasure battery. The split charter is next to it and has big screw terminals. The charger is hard wired to the aux batt,I have spare crocodile style clip on connectors thet came with. They both have in line push fit terminals. I want it to charge me main if needed. To keep wiring down in the bay I intend to wire i straight to the main batt screw terminal on the split charger, would it be in order to take the earth straight to the chasis on the leasure side ??

Is your split charger a VSR volt sensing type or is it triggered by the alternator charge signal? Or maybe off a coil contact?

Im just using the terminals on it to connect to the main battery via the big FO wire that goes across the roof of the engine bay, its the earth Im not sure of, as me charger is only on when hooked up so engine not running

As far as I’m concerned an earth is an earth so long as they’re all good solid attachments and commoned together via the chassis.

I was just thinking about what you’ll actually be charging - the leisure, main, or both - which depends on where you’ve connected your charger positive and what your relay state is at idle, which may depend on what trigger your relay is using.

    Yes, any earth will do.

If you took out the alternator controlled split charge relay and fitted a VSR, you could leave the charger permanently connected to the leisure battery, and it would automatically charge both batteries without moving wires around.

That was actually one of my concerns, as this practice resulted in my leisure gassing itself and exploding, my assumption it being caused by a mismatch in batteries and condition.

More likely a charger problem, coupled with duff batteries .

Ideally the charger should have been measuring the temperature of at least one of the batteries and should have shut off because the battery was too hot. e.g. a solar charger has a temperature sensor you are meant to fix to one of the batteries.

The charge voltage of a hot battery gets lower , so the charger jacks up the current if it is not informed that the battery is hot and so on..

Some battery chargers escape this requirement by completing a charge cycle inside a time limit and going over to float charging after several hours, rather than continuing to charge hard.

Battery exploding needed a spark in the battery when the acid had been electrolysed away and it either exposed loose bits of plate that had fallen off which shorted and sparked in the 'air' rather than under acid , or there was a loose connection inside the battery. . Then there is a perfect mix of hydrogen and oxygen for an explosion.

  8. If the charger can take the battery voltage over the gassing level of the battery, don't charge two dissimilar/unequal charged batteries from the same source.

  9. Don't you think this is over complicating what is basically a very simple procedure - charging a battery ?

  10. I should be if charging a single battery. The problem arises if the split charger switches on and the charger charges both batteries. The charger only sees it as one battery and keeps charging until it thinks it is full which can overcharge the smaller or one with more charge in it. Alternators don't take the voltage above the gassing level of the battery, Smart chargers do.

I just need to charge one at a time with the inline connector, its the earth I was wondering about, not complicated at all.

  13. Being a complete nugget when it comes to electrical witchcraft I would just make everything totally disconnect-able and independantly charge one battery at a time - really should learn more about such things ....

  14. If you disconnected the -ve/earth of one battery at a time, then each would charge properly. The fancy charger wouldn’t get confused by potentially two batteries lashed together, each with different characteristics.

Thats exactly what it will be,

  18. I connected my charger through a three way toggle switch, off, auxiliary or starter battery with a voltmeter from an old boost pack. I like the simplicity and the retro look.
