M25 Run The Ring

Discussion in 'Shows Events You've Missed unless you went' started by AndyC, Sep 7, 2016.

  1. Tried searching for this but no luck.

Is anyone on here doing the Run The Ring event on 25th September?

Essentially a lap of the M25 by VWs in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

    Am considering doing it...

  2. Me neither. Might be a waste of a day, or could be fun being immersed in it all.

  3. manys a time I've spent all day trying to get around the M25

  4. Probably make more money for the charity if everyone donated the petrol money they would have used on the trip.

I turned off the M25 and cut through London a few days ago. There's big stretches of the M25 after the M11 where the hard shoulder has been turned into lane one and the barrier is right next to it. This leaves you no way of getting out the way if you break down and I could imagine barely getting Jan and Chloe out of the van and over the barrier before we watched the van get smashed into thousands of pieces by a tired lorry driver.
You can't even tuck out the way right next to the barrier because then you can't open the Nearside door which leaves you evacuating the van via the drivers door into the traffic, (which will be hopefully swerving around you).

  6. Smart motorways, happening all over. There are "refuge" laybys but presumably you have to time the breakdown to align exactly with one. How do emergency services cope getting to situations in traffic with no hard shoulder?
I think there was another thread about this a while ago @AndyC.

This all started on a Facebook group about a year ago, the page has had loads of arguing, people leaving and so on, and the bloke who started it using his power to convince others his idea is brilliant  it's been ripped apart on almost every other page also, I agree it sound s**t, Just coz it's for charity don't mean it's good, do summat else coz a Convoy of vw's blocking an already blocked road sounds a nightmare, maybe I could Caravan round it to make things even worse

  9. Maybe I won't waste my time. Haha.

I'll probably break down anyway and forever regret going!

  10. Hmm let me see Erm.... No.
I live within the confines of the m25 I would much rather slash my tyres

This idea is so devoid of any common sense or imagination it fits right into today's "it's for charity" culture, where any ridiculous behaviour can be made honourable by those magic words. :(

  12. I was approached by one of the organisers of this 'event' a few weeks ago while at the 'Weyfest festival' and she told me they had many already registered for this!!! Having just been on the M25 and seen the many queues and jams (worst getting from Kent to Essex through the toll tunnel) I cannot think of a worst place to have a van run, so for that reason 'I'm out'. Would rather make a donation!

  13. you wont get lost and you will not need to worry about the speed or cooling of your bus , plenty of stops to cool down and a sense of achievement if you make it ,infact we may be on it, on route home on 25th :Dps i do donate to these charities

  14. ... but if it saves just one life, it will be worth it.

Seriously, can't think of anything worse. I can think of plenty better though. As was said before, save the petrol money, donate some of that, and maybe organise something where children with cancer can have a ride somewhere nice in buses maybe.

If you start at 0100 you might make it round in under three hours.
A mate with an XR3i claimed he did it in well under two hours when it first opened. He said the bends round Leatherhead were quite tight at 110mph...

  16. I can do a full night time lap in my lorry in under 2 and half hours.
I'm not paying the diesel and I'm at a loose end so why not

  17. read a post on facebook that said there was 400 vw's so far which equates to 10 miles apaprently

  18. This wouldn't be a problem as there wold be dozens of old VW's broken down effectively turning lane 1 into a hard shoulder.
