Lumenition Electronic Ignition

  1. Has anyone got this fitted? Been recommended by a mechanic friend but don't know where to start!

  2. It's an old school optically triggered ignition module , better than the Accuspark in that it fits inside a proper Bosch dizzy , not some cheapo Chinese knock off .

Very reliable as well , i had one on my MGBGT for 15 or so years . never did massive mileage per year but went to the South of France in it - never missed a beat ...

EDIT . Just remembered , i have one for a 1600 aircooled in the lock-up , might have to dig it out

Back in my Motorist Discount Centre days in the early 80s, Lumenition was the DBs. Sparkrite was the common one but nowhere near as highly rated.

  4. I fitted one to my MGBGT in 1995 - went OK and still working when I sold it in 2005. As said above - it is all hidden inside your dizzy - and can easily be swapped back to standard points if it fails.

Sparkrites used to vibrate to death when clipped on a Mini ignition coil. But they used to help overcome damp ignition wiring ..

I had Lumenition on my old mk 2 escort van. The ignition worked great... it was just the rest of the van :D

I must admit I was disappointed when I discovered electronic ignition these days meant replacing contact breakers with a little transistor, not a stonking great high energy CDI with an inverter..

  8. They did work well, but optical “choppers” kind of went out of fashion. Hall effect switches are less prone clagging up with dirt.

Sparkrites were fine, but they seemed to have a few reliability issues. I had one on my van for a couple of years. A belt off a CDI unit is very...invigorating .

The sparkrite suffered from the double problem of vibration shaking parts loose and the electromigration of solder under high currents.

Basically the big heavy components shake loose and the switching power transistors desolder themselves.

They were sold as kits, and nobody said "araldite down the capacitors, and loop copper wire round the transistor pins and solder that down too"

Always look for the little black rings in the solder round the power transistor pins.

  11. So anyone know where I can get it?! Failing miserably to find it for a 1979 2l at the moment ☹️

Have seen one for about 35 years! They were about £50 back in 1983 in MDC.

These guys sell it http://autocar-electrical.co.uk/lumenition For the correct fitting kit tell them which part number distributor you have.
EDIT I didn't look at the price!!
