Lubrication. What exactly?

  1. Hi,

I've got a handy app on my phone that reminds to service various bits on my 1979 US Westy based on time or distance. It comes with a default generic set of jobs, which I've changed to by camper specific.

One popped up yesterday "Lubricate chassis". It's marked to come up every 12K miles of every 12 months, trouble is I'm not sure what bits I'm meant to be lubricating! I know I set it up and everything. I was checking out my Bentley last night and there's stuff about checking CV joints, and boots etc. Is this what I mean!!

    Sorry for the vagueness!

grease the beam the pivot, this gets missed, the cv joints and ball joints are sealed but worth checking for splits.

  3. you gotta love greased nipples ;D

  4. As above, the only thing you can grease are your beam and swivel nipples (sounds like an Olympic event :) )

Earlier VWs had a lot more stuff to grease.

  5. Buy yourself a grease gun that takes grease cartridges and has a flexible nozzle it makes the job a lot easier

  6. ... I bought a grease gun and some cartridges about 3 years ago, before I'd actually got the van! Looking forward to using it now!

  7. When you grease your beam using the said nipples, put front of van on axle stands or it wont go in proper, spect you no that, n it goes pop when its full. ;)

As said its about lubing up those nipples. All part of the main service.

  9. ... thanks for the replies all.

Stuart, are you saying that when you serviced my bus you did "the nipples"? I could look at the list of what you did, but it's in my "filing system".

Yes. When I'm home I'll dig out your paper work and pm you.
