Looking for a welding recommendation near Manchester

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by earlylatebay, May 5, 2024.

  1. Can anyone recommend a welder near to Manchester. We used to have John at VW welding services but no more.

I need to get the wheel arches repaired, it is just the lower section. Alan Schofields do these.

  2. Anyone? Can anyone help me find somewhere to get the bay repaired? It is not urgent but I would like to get it done well.

  3. It might be worth giving Stuart a shout at Vipertech down Weaste in Salford, although I’m now thinking that VW John was perhaps on the same industrial estate?

Stuart did our interior, but does full refurbs and will definitely know a decent welder

I can't help, but I strongly advise you not to buy steps without your welder first agreeing to fit them.
These do actually look pretty good and so they should at that price!
When the Klokker steps were all there was I refused to (waste my time trying to) fit them and would only fit full arches. You just might find that's an ingrained attitude with others too. In other words you might have to talk them into it.

  5. The Schofield steps are an excellent fit (not that mine are on yet). Really well made, unlike Klokkerkrap.

I spent a morning wrestling with a klokker one then smashed it flat with my lump hammer and got the customer to agree to a whole arch. Never was there a worse repair panel. Good news on the Schofields one - your jobs are piling up a bit!

  7. I put my Klokker ones on eBay, and some lunatic bought them. No way could they ever fit. Did the prep work for the steps last year, but then the weather changed and I parked that job. Did a bit of profiling and marking out, tho', and the Schofields ones are spot-on.

Snotts the van is parked round the side of the house in disgrace. He's been worked hard since I put Rob's engine in, but I think I may have thrashed him a bit. Engine sounds awful. I have no enthusiasm for taking it out.

Over the past 10 years my enthusiasm for anything apart from tinkering has waned from full on to almost zero. Any suspicions about what may be wrong?

  9. Thank you guys.

  10. Aye. I am sorting the charging, but the step had become priority number 1 now. good news is the van runs really well. Off to the Lakes this weekend to complete the Fred Whitton, cycle challenge.

  11. Same here. Haven't investigated motor yet. I'll do a compression test when I can summon the enthusiasm.

Fingers crossed it's something silly/easy. No point knowing until you're in the mood to follow through and fix it.

I can think of someone good, but they are in Chester.

    vwcamperhaus.co.uk - John Bickley

  14. Chester is not too far. thank you

  15. I’ve just fitted one of those, they’re an excellent fit. £130, which is quite a lot, I know, but the equivalent two separate klokkerholm panels cost £95 and are genuinely the worst panels I’ve ever seen.

  16. They are bloody pricey, but there's nothing else around unless you change the whole arch - bit pointless, as the rest of my wheel arches are in good shape.

Did you stitch weld the outer part where it meets the sawn-off arch? I decided that would be the trickiest bit, getting the profiles lined up.
