Little advice with heat exchange bits

  1. I've just received a my heat exchange for 1.6 engine and it has come with a few extra bits that mean nothing to me and my haynes manual is of no help so was just wondering if anyone could help or have some picture of these part together ? Also if I'm looking at the engine from front with the alternator is the left of the engine now the same as my left ?

  2. The exchanger you've bought is intended for a Beetle. Bus & Beetle are much the same, except for the linkage that opens the h/e flap. You need to remove the lever on the side of the unit, and extend the top operating lever so that the heater cable can pull from the top (your h/e doesn't seem to have any extension on the top of the lever, unfortunately). The cable pulls from the bottom on a beetle.

The other parts are the h/e exhaust gasket, a few beetle linkage parts and the clip to which the heater cable attaches.

Sum up: you won't be able to fit the h/e to a bus without a few modifications to the operating lever. Might be worth sending it back and getting a "universal" one, if they're available. If you look at your old one, you'll see how it all goes together.

Re sides of the engine: the h/es will only fit on the correct side of the engine, as they're "handed", so if it fits, it's the right side!

  3. do you know of any pictures of how it is meant to look ? i brought the van with j pipe so had nothing for the heater exchanges so not sure as to how it should be

It looks right. the lever that sticks down is for beetle, the lever sicking up is for bus.
Put the bracket on the lever using pin and circlip.
When engine fitted, connect cable to lever with the bolt and cylindrical cable clamp in the loop of the bracket. you may have to tap out the clamp, it's m5.

  5. brill thanks guy have used the top bracket was a bit confussing when i seen one each side thought they both has to be used :)
    think now sorted

  6. Are you sure the cable's pulling the lever the right way? Strictly speaking, there should be an extension sticking up from the uppermost lever: seems to be missing on yours. When the cable pulls, the flap should open. Just pulling on the lower sticky-out rod isn't going to work. Easy enough to make one.

  7. Here you go...pic showing sticky-up lever...

Ooops - just noticed in your pic that you have got the right lever on the other side, so you're sorted :)

In that case I won't put my glasses on.

  11. Been thinking if its worth getting rid of the exchanges all together the van came with j-pipes and the correct housing. Is it worth putting the exchanges on if I'm thinking about a propex heater later on ?
