    Hi all
help, my 73 t2 baywindow has just failed its mot , the main reason being the lights , when i pull on the light switch to first position the side lights and headlights come on , when i pull the switch to the second position the side lights go out the headlights stay on but one quite bright(but not full beam bright ) and the other is markedly duller , when the full beam is activated the side lights stay off and the brightness of the headlights just seem to switch sides.
so far i have taken the switch off and cleaned the terminals , i then noticed a small spring poking out at the side of the switch mechanism that dimms the dash lights , like a fool i pulled the spring out and almost certainly i think it was fastened to something at one end as a tug at it just seemed to stretch the spring - and damaged it to a long straight piece of wire that i pulled out with a twang .
i then noticed under the dash - a bit of a mess of wires , unclipped , some unearthed(i found a nice five point earth cluster just below wipe motor) and wires added such as radio , ariel , alarm and speaker wires so i decided to stop , take the battery off and ask a question on her

What is wrong with my lights, im almost certain i will neeed a new switch , is there anything else i should look for that is an obvious known issue but unknown to me ?

also what should happen at each of the 2 stages on pulling the switch on / put full beam on ?

    many thanks
    Brian

  2. when i pull mine on one click =side lights second click= main lights main beam works from indicator stalk.
rotate the switch anti clock wise and the dash lights will dim... or rotate clock wise they will get brighter..

works the same on a beetle i think

that confirms what i thought should happen --- but clearly isnt happening ,
had bus since last oct , working on engine, never thought about the wiring till in the test station, now im stuck , A) till i get some advice B)till ive had some sleep , been on night then went to a campervan meeting at the post ofice pub junction 38 M1 and passed a few hours but should have worked on van , so im off to bed now , hopefully some advice posted when i get up

  4. firstly im not an expert and secondly i reckon you have an earth wire dropped/pulled of or not making a contact . east to check, then make sure by following the wires from the lights that they are connected to the right place , it may help if you have a wiring diagram , im sure there is a link to one somewhere on here perhaps someone knows

i have spent the day cleaning up all the wires, bought a new flasher relay but unable to get a headlight relay just yet , i have cleaned the headlight relay terminals and put things back together and i think things are ok now
one question though , in relation to the green dash light that comes on when i pull the headlight switch out one click , the dash light does illuminate green , i assume thats meant to happen
when i then pull the switch out to the second click, the headlights do come on , but the green dash light goes out , then when i pull the stalk to put full beam on , the blue light illuminates for fulll beam and my lights do go to full beam

my question is should the green dash light go out when i change from side light to headlights ?

    thanks
