Lack of spark cylinder 1

  1. Hey all =]
Right let me start by telling you my problem basically i have a really weak spark on cylinder 1
This is a brand new engine with new 009 dizzy all time up at 30 degrees advanced at 3000rpm and it had been running a little rough lately so i thought id check the timing even though its all done less than 200 miles i started by getting my timing light and wacking it on the number 1 ht lead and got no strobe light. checked it on all the others and it worked fine. so i investigated to fine that it wasnt firing until the revs were brought up quite alot. so i changed the cap and arm even tested coninuity of number one on the dizzy but still no joy =[ also tested the lead and plug even swapped them about but still only a spark when i rev it up. The dwell angle i havent check but has to be right otherwise i wouldnt have spark on the others an the only thing i can think of is a faulty dizzy?? ideas please? im at a loss an my last resort would be to change it to electornic ign as i have one kicking about. ps my idles a little low but all the others spark strong.

Soz about the epic write up theres alot to explain lol

Electronic ignition should be your first resort not your last

  3. oops ignore me

  4. lol last as i dont need it yet as dwell is fine...

  5. Coils new aswell =]

Never underestimate the importance of the dwell angle. What l would suggest is you check the points gap on 1 and then on another cylinder.

Other than that I'm not really sure. All l can suggest is that while the engine is running you pull the HT lead off 1 and check for a spark and then check another to see if the sparks are consistent. If they are then it points to the plug. All l will say is don't take the missing spark from the lead to be the actual problem. l use a Snap On strobe light and even that has been confused in consistency at times.

And if the sparks are consistent and the plugs are fine then its pointing to another area like fuelling and carbs.

  7. I bought a new bosch blue coil when restoring the bay as everything else was new.. put it on. Van ran terribly. put the old one back on and all was fine.

any chance you can get hold of a known good coil. As a test. does the dizzy have any play in the shaft?

Could it be a problem with the corresponding cam on the shaft, if so your electronic ignition kit should fix it.

  9. so NEW and 009 in the same sentence asking for trouble

  10. if the spark is weak off cylinder 1 ,swap the plug and lead off another cylinder and put on number 1 ,turn by hand and see if it is still weak ..

If it is ,turn the dizzy cap round and try again...

if still weak it has to be dizzy problem...

weak spark usually means condensor, but on all four...
