Knocking noise

  1. Hi there - my 72 bay has developed (completely out of the blue) a nasty knocking noise which gets faster the faster I go. I have eliminated front end noises as it is only when in gear and under load, I can feel vibration through the gear lever. I replace both complete sets of CV joints at the back and when putting it back together noticed that as I rotated one of the rear wheels a noise was present from the gearbox where the CV joint bolts to. When rotating the wheel after a few turns it seems to hit a point that stops it but not in a locking up way. Has anyone experienced this before and do you think I am right in thinking that it could mean a new gearbox. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

If you are driving along with it knocking and you dip the clutch does the knocking sound stop?

  3. its not as loud but still there - having looked at the manual I wondered if it was the outer taper roller bearing

I wouldn't expect you'd get a knocking sound from the GB and if it still knocks when the clutch in down it sort of rules that out.

I'd be looking at bearings and CV joints but you're already on it :).

Does the wheel have any movement if you grab both sides and push & pull?

  6. very very small amount of play at the wheel bearings but theres no doubt there is asticking point at the gearbox flange end even with the cv joint disconnected

  7. Thanks for all the help people - I have spoken with a gearbox specialist and the outcome is i'm gonna bite the bullet and have a recon gearbox put in with an empi shifter
