Knock when pulling off.............?

  1. Hi,
I know this is the woolliest of woolly questions but here goes anyway! I spoke with a guy earlier selling an imported bay. Seemed like a very genuine kind. It hasn't been MOT'd etc yet so hasn't driven anywhere. He said that when they drove it a short distance, there was a knock and then it moved fine. It wasn't checked further but a mechanic with him said it will be engine mounts or the clutch i.e. not a big deal.
Now, I know it's impossible to diagnose from that description but does that sound like any common issues?! I wasn't aware of mounts being a big deal with bays. Am I wrong? I'm open to any thoughts on it.
The bay is a long drive for me so I can't pop round for a better look so trying to work out as much as possible in advance.

its either the clutch juddering; our westy has done this for five years as the clutch is contaminated due to the flywheel crank seal passing oil or the engine mounts, especially if its a type 4. I'd check the engine mounts first as these are easiest to look at!

Was it moving when it knocked or from a standstill?
If from a standstill I'd say the brakes were bound and the bang was them releasing.

  4. Could be anything!
    Driveshafts, clutch, brakes, engine mounts/bolts...

Good call guys - either way, if I was thinking of buying a bus that had those issues, I'd expect them sorted before I bought it!

  6. Cv joint.

  7. Ran over someone?

  8. My understanding is that it was stopped and happened when they went to pull off. I'd doubt it was the brakes as they should have picked up on that.

I think he's pretty borderline on selling or fixing and keeping. Sounds like he has plenty of other toys! So, if I pushed him to fix it, he'd probably end up not selling. I don't want to take on a big problem, but I don't want to let a good bay go just because of something fairly minor.

if the faults you mentioned are the only ones and the bus is a good one, go for it! All of them we have listed as possibilities are not big issues to sort, go and see it, see what is what!

  10. Thanks guys. I'm going to post another thread about engines rather than drag this one on!

    I still reckon brakes then.
Don't be fooled by the "can't decide whether to sell or not" line. It's designed to push your decision along. Page 27 in the dodgy salesman's bible...

  13. Yeah, I know Baysearcher. He seemed genuine to me and volunteered the information unprompted. I'm just trying to arm myself a bit more before I decide about going to see it. Any bay costs a lot so I've no intention of buying a dud!

  14. Tins of beans in a cupboard?

    Nice work.
The brakes doing what I described is fairly common if they've been stood for a while.
