Kind of a grinding noise.....

Give it another run and see if the grinding stops when brakes are applied if it does stop .....give it a good brakey run and it might clear ...and then you don't have to do anything

going for a drive is counted as exercise. It’s on the list of approved (!!!) “excuses” to leave the house.

As mentioned in a previous thread, it is allowed to travel to take exercise.
The exercise may be trying to get a wheel off that has been fitted by a garage with a rattle gun.

Whiling away the hours and thinking about my brakes.....
It’s been more than 5 years since anything was replaced (apart from the fluid), so I was thinking maybe now would be the time for an overhaul of the front discs and pads.
On a scale of one to 10, with one being 10 minutes, my granny could do it, jobs a good ‘un; and 10 being the necessity to pay for Zed or Dubs etc to travel the length/width of the country and do it for me..... how easy is it to replace my front brakes?
And where should I be looking for the necessary parts? GSF with their usual discount code ? (60% off until midnight) or the usual VWH, JK etc? I should probably get a wheel bearing too whilst I’m ordering stuff.
1974 stock everything, but better brakes would be nice (no servo, ....so that my thighs would make Fatima Whitbread weep :D )

It doesn't work like that. You have to find a problem to fix it so the first thing is to assess. Then order the parts you need.

  6. I am reminded of the lovely lass who would look after my dog while I was traveling. I turned up one day to pay my dues, she snatched the money from my hand, very unlike her. She was normally more concerned about my lad and how he'd enjoyed being with his litter sister.

Anyway, turns out the chap at the garage had asked who had stolen the brake disks from her car! The reality was, they were so used and so unserviced she'd worn the disks to nothing but wafers.

Perfect Fife humour. "Who stole yer brakes, hen?"

"Hen" is Fife-ish for "my love" etc.

I am certain yours are not nearly as bad and you just might need new pads and a good clean.

That’s way too logical. And requires a modicum of knowledge on the assessment part!
Everything looks rusty, pads are dragging very lumpy rust on the disc which hasn’t changed with a drive and lots of hard braking; plus a wobbly passenger side front wheel.

My golf rears passed like that. No material on the pads, almost no discs left. I let him change it all anyway I was fed up with the metallic grinding noise.

  9. Hmm, maybe new disks too, rust itself isn't a problem, but if the disks are deeply scored you'll be wasting your money on a new set of pads alone.

Loosen (just 1/2 a turn) front wheel nuts
    Jack front.
    Remove wheels.
    Take lots of pictures.
Post them on here and have lunch.

  12. Yep, @Lasty and @zedders are right, you can do this, disk brakes are well within your capabilities, Sarah. And...... make the most of the Herbert's on here

If you have the urge to buy stuff in case GSF never had another offer ... order discs and pads ... there almost service parts, you'll need them sooner or later.
You may or may not discover other things are needed when you are fitting them.

    Ha, thanks!
I'll get it back up on the axle stands at the weekend and whip the wheels off again.
I was hoping a brisk drive with lots of heavy braking would shave all the rust off the discs, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. There's no real hurry to get it done, so I can leave it on the stands for a while - and I would be so chuffed if I could do it myself. Worse case scenario, I fubar the brakes completely, so just stick the front wheels back on and drive really slowly to my local garage?? :D

I can honestly say I've never had to change the discs on any of my buses. Or anyone elses.

  16. That`ll never happen - have a look at the weekend and report back to the class :D

Might be worth buying a set of pads as they`ll get used at some point - forget discs for now ...

I am told that if the discs overheat, they can warp which would give a grating sound perhaps.

  18. Beat me to it - thought i was the only one ...
(25+ years / 100k miles and gawd knows what before i got the van )

The obvious answer is don`t overheat them then

See Sarah - nobody knows until you take a look.
You'll almost certainly find something to replace, but until you look...it's a guessing game.
Clutches is great for this game. Order clutch for weekend swap, engine out, wrong size clutch, it's the weekend. Doh! Now you have to send one back which is a PITA and you didn't get anywhere by guessing.
