Keys

  1. Hello all,

I’ve had a search around The forum but can’t seem to find the answers I need. At the moment I have a lump of keys all doing different jobs; ignition key, passenger door key, drivers door key, fuel cap key, boot key. If possible I’d like to simplify this to one/two keys. Is it doable cheaply? I also need a spare ignition key, the one I have is the original so not sure if that makes things easier.

I have emailed Dave@dubkeys but no reply as of yet so not sure if that’s still a viable option. Any advice greatly received!

  2. I used Dubkeys several years ago, successfully. I then only had two keys, one for the petrol cap, and one for everything else. How long ago did you email? Maybe he is on holiday.

Custom and Commercial do a key matching service, I think their is a link on their website which discusses it

  4. It depends if the locks are original style or aftermarket, some cant be changed to 1 key

If you want to dismantle the locks and re-wafer them all to one key, I've got a "how-to" doc somewhere.

Edit: I should say this may not work for the ignition and fuel cap, or after market locks.

I tried once, got wafers everywhere aside of in the barrel. Proper fiddly job.

Sorry Mark, it is fiddly but I did manage to do mine. Cleaning is important but lubing with graphite powder not oil is also a good tip.

  11. Did my deck lid lock, it's not perfect, I had to gently file one shim down a bit, but it's very doable. You'll need some old locks for parts.

PS that's after the wonderous C&C broke a one-year-only door handle on the Bug when I paid them to match a lock. To be fair, however, to C&C they did make good their mistake.

  12. I did my passenger door lock last month - one wafer was sticking out more than the others - was going to file it down but it fell out anyway - so reassembled it without it and the key now works - although probably find that most VW keys will fit too!!

  13. Dave@dubkeys.com was who I used last year.

Engine lid wad the easiest to get the key code from to get new keys cut and base the re-wafering of others on. Thats as long as they're all the same age still, as the key blank changes too.

Ignition is the hard one as that's difficult to get barrel but if that still matches the engine lid .

I matched all mine to the ignition key except the engine lid lock which was the opposite hand key blank. Some may have lost a wafer along the way...
    I wouldn't say it's difficult.

  15. I used C&C to match mine to the ignition key, though I’ve still got different glovebox lid and petrol cap keys

  16. Thanks all!

I've got one key for the driver's door one for the passenger door, a locker key for the ignition, any key opens the sliding door, I have to juggle the petrol locking key in the rear hatch and the engine lock is broken , I've got used to it and know which key is which

I have 2 keys. One for all the locks, 1 for the petrol cap.
