right - i have been thinking about this and am considering SORNing the van as the tax runs out end of dec.

i may look into dropping the engine and then changing the fuel pipes - checking the gear box - sorting out the ball joints .... and doing the other things that really need to be done to make it safe and get through the next MOT.

only thing is - i have no idea how long this will take and i have a feeling that she may end up being sorn for a fair few months as i cannot afford to get the work done by someone else.

this would also mean - no winter camp - no vowo - no hogs back tour ....

If you have somewhere undercover to do all of this then each of the items you have described is no more than a one day job for each, even for a complete novice. Just take your time, plan what you are going to do and be methodical, don't try to rush it.

Engine out - for a novice i'd say 2 hours, about the same to put it back. Include your new fuel hoses - this is a dead simple job if you've already planned and got the hoses ready to cut to size - Set aside one day for the lot

Ball joints - depends on how many. Stripping each side down is about 1 hour. If you're doing them all then its good to have the 4 new joints ready at hand and find a local engineering firm in advance and plan with them so they can do the joints for you while you wait - its about 5 minutes max for each for them to push out the hold and push in the new. Then its about another hour to put it all back again. Set aside one day

Gearbox - depends on the problem you have. I'd recommend removing it, draining out all of the old oil, and filling it with fresh, replacing the seals as you go. All in that's about a 4 hour job. Set aside one day.

Obviously if you plan other things, cleaning and detailing the engine, engine bay, replacing CV boots etc then you need to factor for this and build it into your schedule.

You've got to want to do it though - you haven't found the source of your fuel/smell leak yet, and have resorted to just shoving the van outside, so perhaps the will is weak in this young one...
