Jobs to do whilst engine is briefly out

  1. Hi peeps. Im pulling the engine out briefly tomoz to replace the crank oil seal snd tend to the fuel pipes and stuff. Is there anything else I should check out before I put it back?

  2. Always a good idea to give it a good clean and check that all fasteners are still tight. Check for other oil leaks. Replace any braided fuel pipes or old spec ones with new SAE J30 R9 spec. (That's the sort that copes with modern petrol now that it has ethanol added). I also found its really easy to adjust the tappets with the engine out and you can do a proper job of reseating the covers too! And if you are taking it out why not replace both crank seals (there's one at each end, and if one's leaking can you be sure the other isn't or won't be soon?) and have a good look at the clutch plate and release bearing. You could remove the firewall and check the fuel tank and the breather pipes that cause problems with petrol smells. I'm sure someone will think of something I've forgotten. Good luck!

  3. Clean and paint your tinware

  4. I am talking in and out the same day dude. I can't afford to leave it apart longer then over night. I might reserve that sort of stuff for next winter when ill give it all a good going over. Right now I just wanna get the fuel leak sorted and the big oil seal. Maybe give it a good clean as mentioned.

Check your clutch and remove your firewall to assess your fuel tank and hoses.

  6. Well the engine out was worthwhile. Crank seal sorted. Freaked clutch replaced and now to tackle some of the PO bodge jobs. The fuel tank wasn't strapped in as the bolts had sheared. He'd stopped it from moving by packing it out with cardboard. Fuel leak also sorted as he'd fitted a new fuel sender with no gasket.
All in all a good shout taking it all out. Just need to fix fuel guage now and cut the new louvre window in ready for the interior to be installed I march. Can't wait!

Glad it proved worthwhile, in a way the more bodges you find the better - it's a bugger when you get that far and don't find anything untoward.

  8. Cheers zed. She's gradually coming together. I'm hoping to get some good use out of it for the summer and then lay her up for the winter months and do some big jobs. Big jobs like replace all the braking system and clean up and under seal chassis. We intend to keep her for a long time so it's worth doing it properly I say.
