JK (HIC) insurance Breakdown recovery

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Jon Herbert, Aug 5, 2020.

  1. Has anyone used this? Mine is up for renewal in the next week or so, luckily I haven’t needed it during the past year and I asked a simple question. Would they recover my camper back to my home or my local garage if it broke down 250 miles away. They didn’t specifically say yes, just that the information on the policy is in the documents. Looking for anyone’s experience of just ‘calling the number’ should the breakdown occur (fingers crossed)
I have done a search of previous threads but couldn’t find anything..

  2. Go with AutoAid, they'll recover anything you or your wife drive anywhere.

    Cheap & highly recommended.

Eh, are you able to see the documents before you commit? Ascertain what the breakdown cover is exactly? Seems a bit wierd they can’t tell you exactly what their own policy says.

I use RAC. I think they say they’ll take your car to a garage of your choice in the UK. So if you broke down at John O Groats you could choose a garage in Lands End.

Don’t know if anyone can say this actually happens though

    Not sure about HIC insurance.

  5. I’ll check out Autoaid, thanks. I used to have RAC and yes they asked me where I would like the vehicle taken the time it did break down.

I changed from RAC to Green Flag after a small garage in the Scottish Highlands decided to take me to a " specialist " nearer civilisation ... who then said that engine is f##ked or words to that effect.
I had to fight the RAC to get them to recover me as I'd already had been recovered in their eyes.
Always wondered if the insurance add ons are any good.
    Watching this post with interest.

    I have used HIC.

my windscreen shattered on my journey home from buying it. They recovered me home.

called them another two times but fixed it before they got there. One time they took four hours to arrive (after Bug Jam) because they didn’t report it was a van they needed to recover.

  8. On Monday I hit my car on a small stone wall
While reversing resulting in a damaged rear wishbone so I wanted the vehicle recovered,
Simple no problem as I have Recovery ,
    So phoned and was told
Ohhh no that’s a RTA You will have to phone your insurance company
Anyway the moral of the story is
If you damage anything to do with suspension By accidentally hitting it on anything
Tell Them you don’t know how it happened it just went like it ;)

Honesty not always the best policy...never give insurance companies an "out" or they will use it to their advantage.

  10. Ive been with the AA for years. Not the cheapest but my experience of them has been first class in both roadside fixes and recovery. Green Flag - My old bug engine wouldn't start (ignition problem) and the Green flag guy stripped the thread on no1 cylinder by putting the spark plug in wrong. They recovered me to my vw specialist and denied they had caused any damage. After having a helicoil insert and labour and an engineers report and getting my insurers involved, they eventually paid for the damage. RAC - couple of years ago on one of the hottest days, the clutch went bang in a work car on the A14 at a particularly dangerous spot. RAC promised to be there in the next hour for 8 hours until i got a call from a local recovery company who said they had been sub contracted the job. They said RAC didn't have enough fleet to cover their network.

The Green Flag guy in Conwy said that the AA only had one recovery vehicle in the area which often meant long waits.
Green Flag, being a network of local garages, in my experience get you sorted/ recovered quickly.
Even the big companies use local guys in remote areas. My RAC help in the Highlands was a coach firm !

  12. I seem to remember that the small print on Green Flag limits the age of the vehicle to 15 years - or something like that. I have all 3 of our vehicles covered by RAC.
Used them a couple of times in last 10 years. Once for the MG - fuel pump broke - trailered back home - but only 20 miles.
Daily car broke down on a Sunday evening - trailered home and then picked up next day and trailered to our garage - agian only 20 miles.
Campervan - rear brakes overheated on M6 - stopped at next junction - RAC turned up after 1/2 hour - jacked bus up - took off brake drum - cleaned out rust and dirt - on both sides. Then instructed me to go for a drive and waited till I came back to make sure it was OK .
Next time 6 months later - in traffic in Windermere and stalled bus - wouldn't start - called RAC - he asked me details then instructed me on how to start a hot VW engine - then rang me back 1/2 hour later to make sure we were still running OK.

I believe Green Flag do have an age limit, I thought it was 10 years but might be wrong. I questioned the AA renewal price and was going to change but managed to get a good deal from them.

I'm with Caravan and motorhome club "Mayday " recovery..it's basically Green Flag with bells on.....no age limit ... which is a good thing as the combined age of my four vehicles is over 115 !

I have a flex plus account with nationwide. £12/month gives all vehicle breakdown (inc motorcycles), travel, phone insurance for the whole family :)

  16. Just double check it covers vehicles as old as ours.

  17. It's 13 now they put it up . Still worth it I've used it 3 times on the van once when the starter went at the bottom of the hill they recovered the van 1 mile the guy was on overtime and only lived round the corner. Good service from then but it's subbed out.

  18. Yup motorhomes up to a certain length 4.5mts if I recall no age limitation

I have had the headache this year a last year too really, trying to find national recovery that takes me to the place of MY choice and NOT the nearest local garage (Im the only one who works on my bus). I think they all or most of the insurance companies changed their policy to take you to the nearest loval garage and thats it..I ve got free recovery with my policy but its same rubbish..so I went with personal cover (me and the wife) with Autoaid that seem to take you to the garage or home but you will choose it..its quite cheap too around 60 quid a year..did not need it yet though so not sure how it works in the real world..
