Landyn booked in for her MOT tomorrow morning... our first time together!

She had a 2 month old MOT when i got her, but given the exhaust was leaking, the brakes failed after a few hundred miles, she wanders like a dog with a scent and she wasn't clocking miles on the odometer (amongst a list of other faults)... I've never really considered the old MOT to be worth the paper it was written on!!

So I'm treating tomorrow like a shopping list, wish me luck in keeping it short!! :D

  3. Good luck

  4. Best of luck dude

  5. It will be fine.

Just done my pick up for the first time last week and it flew through.

I always send it in to see what it fails on and treat it as a bonus if it passes.

Well, what can I say? a Monumental FAIL!! Somethings I knew about before it went in - a slight exhaust blow, for instance (which they considered major) and slightly sloppy steering but this is a pretty huge list and does cover things that the POs MOT should have picked up. The whole list (F for fail, A for Advisory)...

Steering column top bearing excessively worn F
Parking brake has no reserve travel F
Nearside Headlamp aim is too high F
Offside headlamp aim is too low F
Nearside rear lower passenger seat insecure F
Offside Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases F
Rear Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases F
Exhaust emissions hydrocarbon content excessive F
Nearside front lower (beam) component mounting excessively corroded F
Offside front lower (beam) component mounting excessively corroded F
Nearside rear lower (sill and outrigger) is inadequately repaired F
Offside rear lower (outer sill panel seam) is inadequately repaired F
Nearside rear (inner wall) Tyre knackered (DANGEROUS) F
Parking brake efficiency below requirements (DANGEROUS) F
Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort F
    Crack and chip windscreen A
Front drag link end ball joint has sight play A
Nearside front (to rear) brake pipe slightly corroded A
Offside front (to rear) brake pipe slightly corroded A
Previous welding repairs to various seat belt areas (covering himself) A
Battery Insecure (will fail with April rule change) A
    Engine has misfire A
N/S and O/S driveshaft bolts are insecure (DANGEROUS) A
Various welsing repairs to underbody areas (covering himself) A
Engine has possible misfire / poor running A

So, exhaust change (as expected, but on the wrong side), welding to beam, welding up the PO insufficient welding (and repainting a 12 month old paint job in places), a few mechanical fixes. I'm currently thinking that all of the faffing around with tuning the carbs and paying hundreds to get the engine set up was wasted and I should've just had the top end rebuilt, which is on the cards i think :(

Still, what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger!

For those mulling over the new regs, they apparently come into force in April. My tester advised of things like the battery being lose now and said he'd like to see it resolved.

It does souns like hes adheard to the book to cover his own ass

Best to keep on the safe side though

I did explain I'd only had it for 10 months and wanted him to be hard(ish) but some of that is a shock... notably the welding along the cill - side panel.

Still, hopefully I'll have a great strong bus in a few weeks time ::)

  10. Yep got mine Mot'd last week cost me a bit more in repairs than expected but no where near the list you have.

Have fun putting it all in order ;D

  11. Who done you MOT mate?

  14. I am a bit confused about paying to set up the engine? How long ago was that? High hc is un burnt fuel. Tester says it has a misfire so this should be obvious and could be anything from a valve to a plug not working.
That fail list isn't really that bad

It's a long list of not very much matey. :) Tester sounds like he was trying to make an example of you. Jacking points shouldn't fail even if it didn't have any.

Nope, I'm going to share the love about!!

I'm going to do a few of the mechanical bits and attempt a top end rebuild with my brothers help.

I'm farming out the welding and shopping around for quotes, but I need to work out the logistics of moving the van around, which other bits of welding to do and so on. I'm thinking I'll do a number of jobs in the engine bay and close the lid on it afterwards.

Will fix the paint after it passes the retest.

Not going to panic about hitting the renewal date either, I might need to spread the cost a little!!

  18. He's failed it on 15 things,

3 are rear brake related -poss just a bit of adjustment or new shoes

    2 are a headlamps - turn a screw

    2 are a new exhaust

2 are the beam - If too bad get a good 2nd hand one,

1 is Steering column top bearing - (your lucky dont think they do them for early columns anymore)

    1 new tyre - simples.

1 bit of over fuelling - check the plugs/ignition then stick a colour tune kit in there and see whats what with the carbs.

which leaves 2 bits little bits of welding and the seat to sort

Doesn't sound too bad really, though I was wondering how the loose cv joint bolts were only an advise?

    :)
