It's now or never...

  1. Doesn't sound like him. Hosrforth sounds too far away, that's close to Leeds isn't it? He was definitely Bradford, but worth asking.

  2. +1

  3. that's how i kind of feel too, but life is taking some funny old twists and turns lately...
I've had him so long, i can't imagine not seeing him every day, he always makes me smile :) I guess the first step will be seeing how bad he's got and taking it all one step at a time - just i've had to do with trevor :)

  4. Yes I’ve seen you mention elsewhere that life has had its ups and downs recently, nothing too serious I hope . As we’ve said before these VWs are always fixable , even if you have to moth ball him and do it when life settles a bit x

  5. WooHooooooooooooooooo! Workshop time tonight!

I need to get the cargo floor section finished and prepped for H80 but new b-h order not here yet. so will keep cracking on at bits by the engine too and keep banging my head on the gearbox :( :D

  7. Haha, it'd still be a long time-lapse:oops:
I know i could've just gone with a rub over with some scotchbrite followed by hammerite as some 'specialists' do but i want mine to last as i'm keeping it - and i'm never going under there again! :D

That reminds me; need to change the fuel lines coming from the tank and the fuel filter while they're easily accessible. bugger. Need to research doing that :/

  8. Good thinking to change fuel lines and filter while you're under the van, but do the other stuff first.

I did mine and used 5.6mm CODAN R9 fuel hose and a large Meyle plastic filter. I got the CODAN from Volksbolts on ebay and the filter from BandB on ebay. The job is easy if you make up a length of hose from tank outlet to the filter and join another section of hose from filter to the metal pipe piece going through the engine bay bulkhead. The filter sits over the gearbox. Use the same CODAN in the engine bay. I think Volksbolts supplies the correct clips as well.

  9. That's easy on a ramp. I also put in a metal canned fuel filter away from the warm bits and tie wrapped it to a cross brace. Get new fuel clips and hose from the usual suspects. I found Halfords have the right stuff fuel lines in 1 meter lengths, if you don't want to wait for a delivery.

Edit: I'll try and get a picture tonight for you. I used 7.6mmm as that was what was on there, but 5.6 should be fine too.

  10. Thank you! I'm guessing there's no magic method without draining the tank?
There's no halfrauds round here so will probably order online - are there any fuel lines that will last forever and not crack?
I just have a little plastic/ yellow fuel filter - though it's black at the moment  . what is this metal canned witchcraft you speak of?

can you tell i've avoided doing any noisy cupboard stuff despite adult life of vw's? :D

  11. You’re unintentionally opening a can of worms ...... good luck

There’s a company that does Fit And Forget fuel line although my memory is refusing to recall who it is. Google is your friend ;)
I think you can clip the fuel line out of the tank to do the filter and onwards, and then just be quick when doing filter to tank afterwards. It wasn’t too bad.

  14. I was hoping to get him serviced and MOT'd before techenders but think i'll be pushing it at this rate.
Will have a look but got ants in my pants today and need to do stuff other than sitting at the computer (work). Trying to work out if i'll still be able to hear the phone above the angle grinder on the belly pan? :D

Do it!! Get that belly pan prepped!

I’ve got a fuel cut off solenoid thingie that I keep meaning to fit in the fuel lines near the tank .... might have a look at that at techenders if the ramp is available..... you could always do stuff then if you don’t get to it before? Need to check my fuel lines too.

  16. you mean i'll have to actually *do* things at techenders rather than just drink/hangover/repeat?
    That's not fair :(

  17. Draining the tank would be safest.

But...you can use these to clamp the hose.

These are the fuel clips you want, don't use jubilee clips.

The metal canned filters will come up in this search.

    https://www.machine7.com/search.php?xSearch=fuel filter&submit=Search

Fuel lines will perish over time, mine were 9 years old done by the PO, they looked fine but they weren't, certainly not the ones in the engine bay, they had become soft.

You will probably need at least 3 meters of hose if you have twin carbs and a leccy fuel pump.

PS don't forget to check the flexi pipes on the breather thingymagig.

  18. Addendum: There's lots of fuel clamps you can get, but I prefer the type in the ebay link to the scissor type. I am sure mine were less than that cost-wise, but I don't recall where I got them from....sorry.

  19. thank you!

those metal filters - how you supposed to see when they've gone black/look cloggy?

  20. You can't, you need to change them at specified intervals as part of the service schedule.
