It’s 2022 yet people are freezing at home

  1. It sure I understand the relevance of that statement or even what it means?

  2. The haves will continue in the same way… the have nots and those who are on a tighter budget or simply worried about the impending cost will consider their use of their heating. It’s a fact that older people who are less resilient or less resistant to the cold will be frugal with the heating. Breadline and poor families choosing between heat or food!!!? Those with health issues on low incomes living in one room… We aren’t where we should really be in respect of energy infrastructure and having an energy efficient building stock.. so what are we doing about it… making some noises about grants some time next year but no actual concerted effort to actually do much or even publicise what can be done, or develop a significant industry to address it. Where’s the advice from government on what to do… practical advice. People don’t know what if any support they can get!
My mum passed away a few years ago and lived in a council property. It was well maintained by the council but it was a very cold house due to its location and construction. Got sick of going up to see her and it was obvious she’d put the heating on cos we were visiting.
Is it acceptable to just exist and have a cold miserable life constantly worrying about paying the bills in a home that isn’t fit to maintain a comfortable way of life on an insufficient income resulting in borderline starvation. No it’s not ok . It’s also not straightforward to resolve either. But unfortunately the haves are the majority even if some don’t realise it and have little understanding orcempathy for the have nots who of course are all choosing between feeding the kids or funding the next tattoo…. I’ve heard it all!
And us… haves for sure unless there’s any actual genuine van-lifers on here ( if so then good luck to you. I only managed afew weeks living in mine!)

  3. And the issue for me is that we have a failed government who make noises but achieve very little who have been successful in reversing us into the 1970s rather than moving us forward in any way. Ffs don’t bang on about parties that aren’t in government or blame the last Labour government. This lot have led us up the garden path using smokescreens of economic crises and Brexit and anything else they could to camouflage their asset stripping of the British public who they fed with bile and hatred aimed against those fleeing war and pestilence or even those who just came here to make a better life. Against our neighbours and allies who were “controlling us” And yet that continues and the same morons lap it up. And we’re all supposed to feel patriotic about this BS.

we took back control because the rich couldn’t make enough money and controlled the narrative. Isn’t that becoming clear now even to the stupidest?

  4. My 90 year old mum lives in a council bungalow,
I have said to her not to worry in the slightest about using the heating and not to pay too much attention to
The scare tactics by the BBC telling people to heat one room,
I said turn it up to 30c if you like.

  5. I did something similar. flow temp down, heat on constant rad valves on full in the rooms you use. If you don't use em the turn em right down. that was then but this is now and its significantly more expensive just to switch it on!

  6. That's the thing, the gas price per unit is far less than the electricity unit price, yet some people will turn the heating off and sit in front of a 3kw electric fire instead?

We’ve got our heating set to 17. Jumpers on, blankets if we need them. It’s only 3 months then summer/warm for 9 months.

The cost of heating is nothing to do with it being 2022 and we can’t blame gov’t because no matter who was running the asylum we’d be having this issue. This is down to the pesky Russians and the war. I guess you could say we’ve had it cheap for several years.

I think it's more down to supply pricing system where suppliers quote but are paid the amount the highest actually used supplier priced. EU law I read. So when fuel gets a bit scarce, some high priced supplier actually gets to supply it and everyone gets the same price as them. So... despite the supply price of let's say 90% of fuel being unaffected by frikkin anything, it ALL goes up. So you can blame the Russians, but it's our stupid system that should take the bulk of the flack, the Ruskies were the catalyst. Fink that's right, hopefully someone who is more knowledgeable will comment.

  10. Not according to my Tory MP who earlier this year said that we hardly used any Russian gas. Mind he's probably changed his mind to fit the current narrative. In reality the past 30 years should have seen governments establish a robust independent energy strategy, in failing to do so they have driven the price of everything up and made the UK even less competitive. We're not alone.

  11. Agreed (eek!)

  12. Don't worry we'd probably agree on more than one might expect.

I have a feeling that might be true. But we did use a lot of Russian oil. Either way, global prices have increased due to embargo with Russian gas.

What really gets on my wick… India is buying cheap Russian oil, refining it and then selling it on at current prices. That doesn’t sit well with me… remind me how much uk aid still goes to India.

  14. Think Russia Ukraine is a first world problem as far as they are concerned. It ain’t local. Agree we should make it an issue for them though but we’re crawling up their back passage after trade deals!!!
