Is my engine dead?

Still doesn’t want to idle though but nearly there. When the choke clicks off it stalls. Is there a starting point for the bypass screw and the mixture screw? When I cleaned the carb I counted the number of turns out and then back in so they were close to where they were. Maybe they are wrong? If i hols the throttle slightly open to keep it running, the engine hunts..

Ok, done the valves, all ok and didn’t need much adjustment. I’ve put the strobe on and the timing light is jumping all over the place so am I right in thinking the 009 is useless. I managed to get it to idle at about 900rpm but it’s a bit lumpy. If you try to drive off it bogs down and dies unless you give it revs. I’m going to look at getting a new dizzy to start and then maybe a new carb...

  3. This might help with the settings http://www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html

Thanks for all the help folks! I’ve got a 123 dizzy on it’s way from dan Simpson so will hopefully sort the problem

  5. With an 009 there is no static timing.. its 28-32 deg @ 3000 RPM...you then just live with whatever idle timing you end up with... (and yes.. they are awful)

  6. Well...no. You can static time a 009, just as with any other dissy ;)

  7. Well, you can, you are correct....but given the variable manufacturing quality of 009s in their various generic Chinesium clones (these days) and the fact that the 009 has no way to detect and adjust for engine load, I'd only do so to get the engine running (eg after a rebuild or when swapping one in) and then do the final setup by adjusting the point of max advance.

Once I have got the timing set based on max advance, I can then see what the idle timing looks like. In an ideal world it will be around 7deg BTDC, but I bet it's a degree or 2 off that on most 009s...

Then, next time I come to do a tune up, and if I remember the specific timing point for my engine, I could staticly time the 009 then, using that figure. But I'd probably forget it, so would set the timing based on max advance again... ;)

Yep sorry forgot to mention above I had it at 3k revs with the strobe on and it was all over the place! Static timed it to 7.5 just to get it near so it started.
