I believe, from admittedly not a lot of research, that there is a law on statutes that does not allow you to render a citizen of your country stateless. However, Begum is also of Bangladeshi heritage and they supposedly state that all their citizens and their offspring have the right of state to Bangladesh. I assume the Home Secretary seized on that to ensure he was not contravening the first law. As mentioned in other threads - I am not a fan of this particular person - but we should examine the right of politicians and government to render someone stateless - if it's lawful, then no issue. Her right to legal aid is no different to others that claim it, again, I would not want to see politicians interfere with this. Please remember - Politicians rarely have morals and will merrily ignore expert opinion if they believe it will get them a vote.
