Is it possible to build up an engine on a gearbox that is already mounted to a rolling floor pan. This: The case is all buttoned up, has B&Ps fitted, oil cooler etc. I just don't have an engine stand to complete the build on.
Agreed. Is it a Beetle resto or a buggy build? Edit: It is the standard way for a buggy build so I would think works for a Beetle too.
Cheers all. It will be bolted up so saves me taking up space elsewhere in the house (missus said no to kitchen. Don't know why).
This whole endeavour kills several birds, too as I also get some under bench space back. Just got to remember where I left off some 6 years ago...
It will go like the clappers without all the bodywork too. I finished my engine build on a piece of plywood on the ground, and then balancing it on a couple of bits of 2 by 4 timber when it came time to fit the exhaust and tinware.
I've always done the same for type-1 engines. Best place is on the floor, they get heavy and awkward built up.
It is so much easier marrying the two up without bodywork. It took no time at all: Okay okay I know I shouldn't have painted the case but it was my first build many many years ago and I didn't know any better. "My bad" as the kids say.
Can I just check - I'm fairly sure I fitted an alternator stand rather than a generator stand because (I think) an alternator stand is compatible with both but a generator stand isn't so good for future upgrades. Have I got that correct? Edit: found the answer: yes will fit both
