While messing about moving my steering column in the dark the other day I thought I’d broken a brown wire that goes from the switch… turns out I might not have as there is also a grey wire loose. No sign of the other end of any broken connections and the console etc still powers up when I turn ignition on. Anyone enlighten me as to where these 2 should go please…
They look deliberately cut to me or deliberately not connected as in superfluous wires from something.? What doesn't work?
I have to guess the at they have been that way about 3 years. When I found the first I thought it was my mishandling of the column but the 2 of them with no sign of an other end… but weird but everything works still…
Pretty sure replacement ignition switches have a wire for an intermediate position to power your radio without turning on the ignition, that might be the grey one.
Pretty sure I saw a grey wire on the circuit diagram when I was looking for where brown went… will revisit it in daylight tomorrow
This. There is a grey from 'S' on the ignition switch, which is for the radio as it stays live in the accessory position on the key. I would test if it's live with the ignition on.
I think mine has two spare wires on it, as I had to replace it a few years back . I will go and look a bit later. At least I taped over the ends because if you get it just right you can short the inner of the wire to some earthed metal and smoke the unfused wiring.. On mine the grey is 12 volts in ignition off position and the brown does not appear to do anything as it does not connect to 12 volts or ground at any time key in or out or in any position. As it is as it was when it came from GSF they are terminated in bare spades.
If the switch can detect a key in the ignition (as with "new" Golf-style ones), extra terminals are likely to be: Ign Switch: 30 - +12V from battery 50 - to starter solenoid 15 - +12V supply, maintained when starting X - +12V supply, off when starting S - +12V when key in barrel P - +12V when ign off, key in or out (n/u)
