It's bolted to the gearbox, so I assume it will be earthed?
The battery lead is connected to the copper looking stud and I put a screwdriver across from one copper stu to the other and it span but didn't turn the engine. Is that right?

  3. Short the main starter stud to the solenoid terminal. Don't run yourself over ;)

I assume you have the wire from the wiring loom with the spade connector on the solenoid

  5. It should be earthed through the bell housing, assuming they haven't slathered the starter flange with paint.

Take it out, connect -ve battery lead to the flange, +ve to the big stud, and short the stud to the solenoid terminal. Pinion should pop out, and starter should turn.

OK that worked she turned over but didn't start.
Do I need a new switch?
I've probably messed the timing up when I had the engine out.
I static timed it to TDC but that's probably wrong I've no idea on a type 4 engine.[IMG]

  8. If it won't turn over off the key, then yes you likely need a new switch. They lead a hard life. A hot start relay would solve your problem tho'. A good thing to have anyway.

Surprised that more people don't have a quick start relay. I first fitted one on my 6V Beetle in the early '70s. Straight forward to fit and a good introduction to vehicle electrics.
