IDF servo take off

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Clipper2bay, Jun 8, 2020.

  1. Hi Guys,
anyone had any experience of fitting Weber IDF's to a type one twinport in a late bay? The manifolds are no problem to get, but all the pics I see, don't have a boss to tap for the brake servo take off. How would I do it?
    Cheers

Drill and tap the inlet manifold and install a barbed fitting

There is no boss provided, the walls are quite thin but it's doable with care. The main thing is to mock up and be sure it's pointing in a good direction. Tapping into one is good enough.

  4. Depending on where you’re running the hose, number four is a good one to tap a fitting into. You’ll need to take the carb/manifold off before doing it.

And...try and have it or the first part of the hose uphill or it'll fill with fuel.

  6. Thanks for the replies. As the wall of the manifold is thin, is there enough meat for a fitting to stay put. I did this with an ICT manifold a couple of years ago, and the fitting eventually fell out (partly why I'm looking at new carbs). Any advice on what hose barb to use?

are you saying that you are changing the carb set up and the inlet manifolds to fix a fitting , can’t you just repair the manifold/ fitting ?!

  8. Here's mine. From memory it's a 1/4" NPT elbow fitting. There was about enough meat on the manifold for it to seal snugly. If you're clever, you can get it pointing straight at the hole in the bodywork, hence #4 being best.

If you're using a taper thread fitting, top tip is to go easy with the tap. Cut a few threads, try the fitting, maybe cut a few more until it seals on the taper. If you go mad and run the tap all the way in on thin-section stuff, you may end up with hardly any taper, so the thing doesn't seal when it's done up.

Couldn't you get a silver one?

  11. LOL. . no I'm not throwing the baby out...
My bus came with empi 34 icts and manifolds. They are shagged, and obviously not worth fixing, so I'm looking at other options.

  12. In what way are they shagged?

  13. It came with a hex bar linkage, which ovalled the spindle holes on both carbs (because it pushes down and round). I switched to a CSP centre linkage, but it weeps fuel through the worn spindle holes. There's no bush to replace and not enough meat to drill out and replace with bushes (which id have to have made). It means I can't get them to open at the same time, so makes it a lumpy drive. I'm fed up with them, as I have chased various issues with them, and spent enough money that I should have just replaced them to start off with.
I am considering replacing with new genuine Weber icts and CB performance manifolds, at least that way I have a bunch of nearly new spares

  14. I've abandoned the IDF idea on grounds of cost, and having to tap the manifold for the servo
