I may be too early with this one (Tax related) yawn

Has anyone taxed online, by monthly direct debit, then scorned at a later date. Or, has anyone set up a monthly direct debit, then later changed the taxation class to historic? It says on the V5C that the taxation class can only be changed when taxing. So how would that work if if you were paying by direct debit? Maybe I need to send DVLC another email.
