I hate drum brakes

  1. Its took me all morning to remove clean up and adjust one effing drum brake on the bus

Thanks to whoever in its past life decided to chew the adjustment slots larger the rubber bungs are no longer present
Because of this water has got in and siezed the star adjusters
Also when is it good practice to hold the handbrake cable sleeve in place with silcone sealent

What pains me the most is ive just cleaned everything up unseized and lubed the adjusters scoured inside the drum face and scoured the shoes and put it all back together

Im so looking forward to stripping it all back out after the mot and replacing what needs replacing and painting the parts up to the same standard as the front end

Oh well i better go and price up new drums and back plates and new handbrake cables and rear flexi hoses
I wonder if new backplates come with the rubber bungs or if they have to be bought seperatly at a rip off price

i got all my rear brake bits off bigrich. all looks like good shizzle!

  3. Bungs are extra Paradude, Mine were the same (elongated holes) fortunatley my drums were still good, Watch out if you get the JK Star adjusters they didn't fit on mine and i ended up re using the old ones.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

99 out of 100 have chewed up holes.
Early's adjust through the drum - no backplate holes and you don't even have to crawl under the van. :)

  5. you can put any old rubber piece in to block the holes. Did you use copper grease on the adjusters and brake moving parts? Makes adjustment nice and slick for the future
    :)

  6.
  7. at least now its all freed of it will strip back down easy :D cant you repair the back plates? if you have a welder you could make up a repair plate and put it over the old hole?

  8. After seeing the price of new back plates i will be welding new steel into my old ones
Then ill drill new adjusting holes to take some generic rubber grommits

I shouldent have moaned really i just got feck all sleep last night and expected to get more than one drum done today

Oh well heres hoping for good weather tmw as the wifes got a day off work

  9. im thinking a couple of washers per side welded to each back plate is much cheaper than £50 per side ;D
