I think a new set of pistons and cylinders, clean out the case and oil system up to the filter, making sure its fitted with sensible smaller sized carburettors or at least the smallest venturis, then get an AFR sensor and tune it up in real life ( may beat a rolling road because real life involves running at 20mph behind a bus going up a steep hill, or cruising at 65mph for an hour..., not whizzing some heavy rollers up and down the power band..)

This will avoid the tuning sensitivity of too big carburettors on a small engine.

And put the oil pipes on the right way round..

Obviously let’s take it as read that I know nothing about engines, but reading this thread from the start, and knowing therefore about a previous build issue where the pressure relief valve was put in backwards..... and now you have an engine oil pressure build up problem.......
was the original problem of the release valve the wrong way around definitely sorted? Or is it an entirely different thing and I should just go back to my G&T and knitting??!

I'm keeping quiet too, so I get extra apple crumble at Techenders :D

    Good move ;)

  9. Scrooge, i dont have a prob with oil pressure. I thought i had a prob with oil leaks due to pressure but it turned out to be case pressure which was caused by a holed piston.

You did have an oil filter blow off in all this did you not , after changing from a type without a drainback valve to one with a drainback valve... ?

  11. No i never had an oil filter blow off. I did think i had a leak on the maxi 3 but the oil was really coming from the case breathing so heavy coming out the dip stick hole and other placesgoing all over the place which made it hard to tell where it was coming from.

Is the afr stuff a bit ott? I have no knowledge of such stuff and sounds complicated?

  12. I just have the same empi oil cooler i always had with the old engine which has a filter in the loop. One pipe from the pump to filter, pipe from filter to cooler, pipe from cooler to pump back. Thats it. On the original engine the connection was via the front pressure relief now its off the pump.

  13. I would ditch an external cooler if you’ve got one. Over the fence with it!

I think you can stop worrying about all that now you've seen the piston. You will need to work out why it broke. Could it have been hitting the head? I did that once, it was fine until it ran for 10 minutes and warmed up, then tap-tap-tap. It didn't break but if I'd driven it it wouldn't surprise me if it had. I didn't know much about engine building.
I would keep the cooler but disconnect it for now and plug anything that could get dirt in it. A cooler without a thermostat is no use but you might want it later when everything is ironed out.

You own a non standard engine. This complicates it.
People keep selling you things. That to start with are OTT for a small engine, which tune it up or change the way it works so that it can rapidly go off tune and potentially self destruct.

Time for you to read, watch and begin understanding or be forever paying credit card bills.

  19. By the way mike, the carbs were supplied, installed and setup by Funkenblitz in Southampton so should be close on jetting etc for the engine being only 41cc over the original, and yes i know they are a bit overkill for the engine but i always hoped to step up at some point.
...and yes i know they need tuning for the new engine but that will come soon once i have a running engine but in all the stuff i have read on setting them up i have never heard of using afrs.

All the rage. Most people manage without but of course they don't know if there jetting is as good as it could be.
