I give up! - advice on who can help - oil everywhere post rebuild

  1. Exactly my conclusion Mike, trouble is i cant seem to find any to buy which is a bit crap. Found one side on ebay second hand but that was it.

    You need all these "optional" original parts really. That way when it overheats and scatters it's internals across the motorway you'll know it wasn't for the lack of flaps, springs, thermostat, hoover bits and seals. :thumbsup:

  5. Did a bit more prep on the van stripping tinware etc today and had some thoughts on the oil cooler/filter setup which i overlooked on the first build.
    Mike i know has something similar....So....you may recall i have a maxi 3 pump which has an in and out on the pump. Its a Illegitimate child on connections as they are close to the bar even though the bar's been cut down to get the connections on. On closer inspection on the case it appears i might have access to the oil gallery above via removal of s plug on the autolinea case. Could one of you in the know advise whether the hex head plug is a gallery access plug and could be removed to put a connection on and what i would need to do if it is to the maxi 3 pump to connect the the return to the proposed gallery connection?   6. By the way mike, i also tried to get my oil cooler off today with a vew to flushing it and was impressed at how well fitted it is. Its so snug under there i could not get a socket on to get the thing off but will take some pics for position info for others. Mine uses npt connections rather than barbed so the problem will now be getting new pipes sorted to go on it with barbs the pump end. The pipe runs are quite long...i guess its ok to have long pipes???

    It's a good sign that the original plugs were removed to clean the case. Veey helpful for you. I would call whoever fitted them, ask what thread lock they used and whether that will have made them unremoveable. Hopefully not! If they will come back out and can be reused it's a great start for you.

    Unfortunately the plugs/tapped holes are too small for the fitting needed for full flow.

    Maybe simplest thing mechanically is stick with the maxi pump. I just checked and they have 26mm gears which is fine.
    Pipe lengths, no worries, no pressure will be lost.

    It all seems very complicated to me, 1641, 1776, machining cases, different oil pumps, external coolers, big carbs etc, etc for a bus to be used in the summer pottering around with the priority being reliability.

    Why not just get a stock exchange engine? @iblaze has just got one for £1300, albeit on a long lead time, fit some standard carbs, get it set up by someone that knows their stuff and you'll have a useable and reliable bus that you can use and become confident with.

    Or am I missing the point and you want higher performance?

    You can own a bus and not go camping thou knows. I use mine all year round, it's my only vehicle.
    For some people it's a lark. I like driving mine, I can overtake and everything. And I get to have flashy carbs, a shiny exhaust plus a big box of jets and a programmable distributor to fiddle with.
    And - I dare say if you had a 1600 you might find it wanting... or maybe not. :)

    And for me, not having to thrash it in each gear so the engine is spinning fast enough for the next one is more relaxing and leads to happier pottering.
     
  12. Having had the van for 15 odd years, when i drive her i am in the zedders and snotty school. Hills and long trips dropping gears to make 40 mph up a hill is tiresome and takes the shine off especially on long trips. A bit more glide in the old girls stride has been on the list for years and now the oportunity to make better use of the bits that are there already is there. Thats the reasoning anyhow.

  13. And worth doing. A stock 1600 - assume that’s what you’ve got - is quite zippy around town, but they soon run out of steam even on slight inclines.

    Get it fixed, and life will be transformed. But…don’t obsess, or you’ll never get your engine finished ;).

    The fens are brilliant, you get big skies and fantastic sunsets, and big skies... and fantastic sunsets, and, um...

    Frankly the fens sent me loopy eventually, I pined for a nearer horizon and higher ground.

    There is nothing particularly wrong with the Maxi3, apart from pipework hitting the engine support. Nothing that an angle grinder doesnt rapidly cure.

    Inside it is as @zedders says, a 26mm Schadek pump custom cast for CB, with a CB mark also on the casting. I know that with a jammed oil pressure relief valve, my pump put out well over 105 psi.

    It really eases engine swaps, as all you do is swap the pump without fiddling with drilling and tapping things specially for your particular choice of pump and entry and exit into the block.

    Having long oil pipes helps with the cooling. Because of the pressure regulation system built into the engine, my 5 metre loop of oil pipe plus cooler , filter and sandwich plate produce no noticeable pressure drop. It took 115 degrees C to get the idle pressure down to 12 psi the other day.
